Octane 17.3" Not shutting down fully

Hello!

I have an irritating problem with my Octane. Sometimes (more often than not really) when I choose shutdown from the start menu it doesn't quite finish. All disk activity stops but the power light and num lock light stay lit. I have to hold the power button for a few seconds to complete the shutdown.

It also happens when I choose to boot into say, Safe Mode from Windows. In this case I have to hold the button to finish the shutdown and then when I press the power button again to reboot, it then goes into safe mode.

I'm using windows 10, so I'm guessing it's that. I've seen quite a few threads about this but no answers. I have tried some things like disabling uefi, also fastboot is disabled as is sleep and hibernation.

Anyone got any ideas how to resolve this? I know it's not the biggest problem ever but I can't stand things not working as they should!

Thanks in advance!

maybe it is something that loads on boot, but does not shut down correctly, so you could try disabling any such software.

Have you tried running Mint, Ubuntu or any other linux on your lap top? You could run it from a usb stick. It would be great to hear if it runs Ok.

I'd not thought of that.
Seeing as I can run it from USB, I'm downloading mint now and will give it a go!
I'll update here later!

Thank you!

Using Mint, the my laptop does close down/restart as it should
Actually, I went away for a while and when I came back the system didn't resume but I imagine this is just from using it from a USB stick.

So Windows 10 is the culprit then? Well, I feel a bit better for that!

Have you upgraded to Windows 10 from another version of Windows? If so, I would check the Downloads section of your account on the PC Sepcialist main website to see whether there is a BIOS upgrade for your build and Windows 10. If there is then download and install it. It's also worth checking to see whether there is a Windows 10 chipset driver for your build for Windows 10, if not install the Windows 8.1 chipset driver - Windows Update doesn't often find chipset drivers for laptops.. See whether that helps.

There is a bios update dated 02-12-15 but it says don't install unless instructed to by PCS.
I am pretty confident about these things but obv don't want to ruin my laptop!
Actually if I did stuff it up, would PCS be able to repair that damage (for a fee of course)

I came from windows 7 but have done a fresh install since then.

Thanks for you help, I'll read the instructions for bios update and see what I think :)

There was a BIOS update for mine too (Optimus IV) which I installed just fine. To be on the safe side give PCS a call and ask them whether you should install the BIOS update. I'm fairly confident the answer will be yes if you're installing Windows 10 (and probably no if you're not).

I updated the BIOS but no change.

So, I totally reinstalled Windows fresh (with drive format as well). So now it shuts down fine and I'm just going to have to make sure, when it does it again that I find out what changed during that session.

Thanks for your help with this
