Hello mate, got a couple of questions so we can help you out a bit more.
What is your budget?
Do you have a monitor already or have one in mind? Make and model or resolution and refresh rate would be handy to know.
Please could you post your configuration link so we can make easier edits.
For starters, you don't need the 5900x to be overclocked, you can downgrade the mobo to the ROG STRIX X-570 and I would recommend switching out the cooler for the H115i Platinum.

We'll be able to give more advice once you've answered the above questions. :)

Thanks a lot @MrWilson
I’ve edited the original post to include the information you’ve requested. Thanks again for your help here :)

just to add - I am going a little overboard just for future proofing. Also because this is going to my first PC I’d have bought with my money and I might be a bit overexcited :)

Very jealous of the G9!

Specced you out a luxury build with lots of RGB loveliness. Top of the range cooler, a second SSD for games and programs, and a 3080 to power your beastly monitor. One thing I am unsure of is the wireless card, I have kept it as is for now but hopefully someone else with a bit more knowledge on the matter can advise you further. But overall I am very jealous of this build!

Solid build by @MrWilson. As regards the Asus WiFi card, it’s not worth the amount you pay for it. The AX200 is a great card and it’s got the added bonus of having Bluetooth connectivity, I’d go for that one 👍

@AgentCooper @MrWilson I hope I am not spamming you with this comment. I meant to check in with you guys since I am considering changing my Graphic card to 3090 from 3080 (The wait is too long for 3080). With that, I was also considering changing to 5950 instead of 5900. What do you guys think? Also, would you still suggest to go with the original case (CORSAIR CRYSTAL SERIES 680X RGB GAMING CASE) or change that to COOLERMASTER MASTERCASE H500M GAMING CASE? I've been comparing the airflow and temperatures with some reviews online and apparently, the latter has better performance. What are your thoughts?
Thank you. :)

GPU: Ordinarily the advice would be no on changing to the 3090..however, given the wait times on the 3080 vs the 3090, then it's a personal choice really. If you can afford the extra £500 or whatever it is, fair enough. Personally, I'd wait for the 3080 as I don't see the point in spending £500 just to get something quicker. Having said that, the difference was £600 so £500 is a bargain :ROFLMAO:

CPU: Will you utilise the extra cores enough to warrant the extra £300 you will be spending? On the face of it, yes, the 5950x offers better value....unless you won't utilise the extra, in which case it is worse value.

Case: Depends who was doing the review, what components etc. Whilst the H500M may have better airflow (due to it's size etc), the 680x has been designed to minimise heat with it's dual-chamber design. My understanding is that the 680x is the better performer but I have not researched them much...the 680x looks better though...the 500M looks weird with it's 2 windmill size fans

Completely agree with the above.

While we’re in the amending mood, to support the 3090 I would recommend upping your PSU to a 1000W model, and now that it is back in stock I would recommend upgrading your OS drive to the 980 pro.

Agreed. It's not great having to spend £500 extra to get it quicker. However, it has started affecting my work and thus I think I will have to go for it.
5950 - I realized my current work laptop (i9) started choking while running multiple IDEs and docker (which I did not think about before) and thus it may be safer for me to go for the extra cores.
the 500M does look weird with the oversized fans 😂I thought it was just me but good to know others have the same opinion about it. I will stick with the original case in that case. Thank you for your response @Nursemorph :)

Hello again @MrWilson. :) I'll make those changes too. Can I ask you why do I need to go for 1000W when the system requirements are 750W? My question is stemming due to this notification I get with the current 850W power supply
"You have selected a 850W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 750W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around of 700W power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is over charge you"

I could be missing something fundamental :)
Thank you.

Sounds like the 5950x and 3090 are a good call then (y)

To be fair, I generally have issues with 140mm fans where they can be seen....they just look wrong to me...it would be like getting a Ford Fiesta and then putting a radiator in the front that is meant for an HGV...might be excellent for cooling but would just look wrong (disclaimer: This is assuming that the radiator from an HGV would even fit..I appreciate that it may be physically impossible but merely illustrates my point ;))
Hahaha I get it. That's a good analogy. I am on the same page as you about it. The reviews gave me a second thought. 😅

So the 3090 is a little more power hungry than the 3080. A larger PSU means that there is less time spent near max capacity, which is what puts the wear and tear on the PSU. This also gives room for a GPU upgrade down the line as we have seen a trend of GPUs becoming more and more power hungry.

Sorry, I’m not around much at the moment so have just caught up with this thread. Just an added point, whilst the ROG Strix X570 is no slouch, the Crosshair VIII is the ideal motherboard to pair up with the 5950X 🙂👍

The STRIX will be fine, the Crosshair would be a nice option to have but to save any hanging about I don't think you will have any issues with the STRIX.

Note that as much as you will use more cores on the 5950X I doubt you will actually see much usage on them. The 5900X would more than likely have you covered. Both chips are multi-tasking monsters.

IDEs & Docker can access all cores at the same time IIRC, is that the case? It's not like a VM where you allocate cores, or is it? If my thinking is correct, then the 5900X would cover you.

With the situation, budget and everything considered. I think the 5950X would be a great choice. I'm just saying don't feel put out if the 5900X is more accessible.

Hey @Scott, yes, you are right. We don't have to allocate memory to docker containers unless we want to. It can utilize all the cores.

What made me rethink the CPU option was my recent experience with my work laptop (i9) where when I had multiple IDEs open and started running a dockerized application (7 containers including DB), the laptop was a) very loud. b) overheated c) still lagging when trying to use the IDEs to the point that I had to close some other applications (Wireshark and an IDE) to just make it usable.

Also, I got on a call with PCS since I had issues with my payment when changing the order and he was happy to check the stock for me and said 5950 is in stock but may not be allocated to me right away (orange status?) but the stocks are coming in so I should expect one to be allocated to me in the next 2 weeks. Which sounded alright to me assuming 5900 are low on stock too. So I decided to go with it.
However, thanks for your inputs. I really appreciate that :)

Was it perhaps the RAM that was the limiting factor with the laptop rather than the i9?

The more grunt the better for those operations regardless of course :D
