Optimus VII 15.6"

First time posting, just wanted to ask for advice about this spec. I'm very much a newbie when it comes to computer specs and hardware so perhaps someone can help me out.

I am planning on using this laptop mainly to play strategy games like the Total War series, StarCraft 2, Civ etc. I may also dabble in other types of games but, generally speaking, strategy will be the main focus.

So can anyone tell me if this spec is good for those types of games?

What's your budget? The 960M will not be terribly happy with the higher settings on newer total war titles

You should be able to squeeze in the Optimus VII Pro in a similar config. Benefits being the i5 6440HQ and the GTX 965M.

The 965M especially should get you quite a bit further, plus Total War titles are said to be quite demanding on the CPU so having a somewhat better one is likely also an asset there.

Not sure if the PM951 is the best SSD at that capacity and price point, but I don't know about it much so perhaps others will comment.

Thanks for that Oussebon! I hadn't really looked at the pro before, but this build looks good. And thanks for including those links! Very useful to see the differences.

What's your opinion on the thermal paste? For an extra £9 it seems like a small price to pay for something that seems quite important, but is it really worth it?

The paste isn't a bad idea. It's not essential, but it would likely help a little with temps, potentially keeping fans quieter. The only reason I didn't put it in there was to keep as close to £800 as possible.

Yeah I would probably fork out that little bit extra for the better paste if it will help. It's not a huge dent to the overall cost so that's fine.

One last question for you: Do you know what's the difference between the HyperX IMPACT RAM and the Kingston SODIMM RAM? If it is only £1 difference in price, it can't be a big difference in performance... right?

I believe these are the respective datasheets, though am not 100% sure.

I think the main difference is the lower latency of the HyperX. 9-9-9 vs 11-11-11. So it's faster. Quite what effect that has on gaming I can't say - as in whether it would actually net you an extra FPS here or there or whether it's literally no different. There'll probably be a benchmark out there, may check later if I remember and have a moment to do so. :)
