Optimus Vii - Difference between DDR3 and DDR4 versions?

The DDR4 one just has DDR4 rather than DDR3L, I don't think there are any substantive differences beyond that. The performance difference would be negligible.

The DDR4 one is currently cheaper than the DDR3 one.

However, if you intend to do gaming on the laptop I would strong suggest the Optimus VIII instead as it is in the same kind of price range but has a much, much more powerful GPU. I would recommend getting the GTX 1050 ti in the Optimus VIII.

Unfortunatley the optimus VIII doesn't have a disc drive which makes it useless to me as a gaming machine as I mostly use discs.

DDR4 is replacing DDR3 as the standard

it uses lower voltage - less power and runs cooler.
the faster speeds means greater bandwidth, but in general use the performance benefit is very little - and the increased latency on early sticks negate any performance benefits compared to low-latency DDR3 memory - so choose low-latency options

you can always use an external disk drive when you want to install a game you have on disk
