Optimus VIII

Hi all

I just got my laptop delivered yday, it looks and works great so far, no complains about it, only that i had two problems that kinda bug me so far

One is that the laptop froze two times since i got it, and the first time i thought it was normal, but it froze again recently, and i'm wondering if there's anything i could check

Last thing i wanna talk about is the SSHD, when transferring files from the PC to the USB, the speed doesnt go higher than 10mbps, and again i'm asking if theres anything that could cause this low speed

Any help is appreciated :)

My specs:

Chassis & Display Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 7700HQ (2.8GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM) 16GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti - 4.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st Hard Disk 1TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 2.5" SSHD

What context did it freeze in? And when you say it froze, what exactly happened?

There are a few possibilities. What kind of files are they? Is something else using your disk (either the internal one, or the external one) while you're trying to copy the files?

I want to echo what Oussebon has asked...

How does it freeze, when does it freeze, does it recover itself?

Unfortunately you have selected an SSHD that is a very very poor choice. There are several posts on here complaining of the poor performance of that drive, especially with Windows Update. It seems to me that the cache management on that drive is not particularly good, the '5x faster' claim is almost certainly only under lab conditions. Sadly I doubt there is anything you can do to improve the file copy speed with that drive.

It may be that the freezes of which you speak are also related to the poor performance of that drive. If the freezes recover themselves in a few seconds then it's almost certainly that drive that's your problem. An SSHD like that makes no sense when it's the only drive in the system, any benefits the cache might provide to regularly used OS files is polluted by the user data that is on the same drive.

In your position I would be calling PCS and asking whether I could swap that SSHD for a regular 5400rpm 1TB HDD. AFAIK there are no 1TB 7200rpm drives available in that form factor, and although a 5400rpm HDD is on the slow side you will save the wasted time searching the SSHD cache and not finding the wanted data, this will mean that in general you'll get slightly better performance from a 5400rpm HDD as the sole drive than from that SSHD (which is backed by a 5400rpm drive)...

Hey ubuysa, thanks for the response, theres a 2.5in 7200rpm 1tb HDD on the pcspecialist website, wouldn't that work?

It would, provided it will fit. Not all 2.5" HDDs are the same physical size, they vary between 7mm, 9.5mm and 12mm in height. The commonest type is the 9.5mm drive but if you buy a 9.5mm drive and your laptop bay expects a 7mm drive it won't fit. If you want to swap out that SSHD (and IMO that would be a very good idea) you really need to call PCS and check that any drive you consider buying will physically fit.
