Yes it was a busy year for us Irish then! A lot of Donovans, and Murphys, and O'Sullivans, and so on!

Still hard to believe that our population peaked at 8.1 million around that time - 70% more than we have now......damn potatoes...... :cry:
I hadn’t realised that the population was so large in Ireland then compared to now.

Yep - it just about halved between mid 19th century and 1930. The Famine lost us 1 million or so to start with and then a continuous process of emigration after that. 1847 was a bad year for all involved..... 🥔 :cry:

(EDIT - analysis is all island obviously - our current population in the Republic is a little over 4.8 million now I think.)
