Pc shutting down

Hi everyone, My pc is getting a bit long in the tooth now its a watercooled AMD A10-7870k 8GB ram with a Nvidia geforce GTX 960 graphics card but for some reason it Sporadically shuts down on bootup, the cpu which is watercooled feels very hot then.
I have cleaned it thoroughly and havent had an issue for more than a month but this evening it shut down on bootup again and the cpu cooler felt hot to touch.
I left it while I ate supper and rebooted it to see what might be wrong and its running fine again, ive had the side panel off all evening and the cooler is barely warm to touch. any idea what could be happening?

Is this a PCSpecialist machine? Can you post your full specs from the order page?

The BSOD Doctor
It rather sounds to me as though the startup of some driver or application is looping through a short block of code, thus driving the CPU hard to the point of thermal shutdown. This is obviously a failure but it could be caused by hardware - some device not responding properly to a driver as it initialises, or possibly flaky RAM - or it could be some sort of software error - perhaps related to the order in which things start.

The first thing I would do is unplug all external devices except monitor keyboard and mouse and see whether it thermal shutdowns then.

If you have a wireless keyboard and/or mouse then replace the batteries. (I know, but you'd be amazed how many strange issues that has solved).

If it's still failing then go into the Startup tab of Task Manager and disable everything in there that you can do without for a while, then see whether it fails again on boot.

It's also worth downloading Memtest, use the extracted tool to make a bootable USB stick and then boot that USB. Memtest will start running automatically (after a short delay and as long as you don't move the mouse or press any keys). This free version only does 4 iterations of the various tests but it will take a few hours to run, even on only 8GB of RAM. I suggest you start it off before you go to bed, it will be done in the morning. If there is even a single error you need to replace the RAM.

I would also monitor your thermals with hwmonitor, it’s possible the pump is failing on the cooler:

Thank you peeps I will try both, I'm on annual leave tomorrow for a week so I will devote the whole day to trying it. I do have 2 external drives always connected, I also notice that the graphics card fans don't spin although I think its a known thing that they don't kick in until the card gets above a certain temp. I'll check everything one by one.
Cannot wait for my new pc specialist order to arrive as well.

well I had external Hdd plugged in, unplugged, I installed HWMonitor from cpuid its showingthe cpu is reaching 128 dC on all cores the liquid cooler pipe gets very hot and the radiator fan gets loud. the other pipe ?return stays cool to touch but hwmonitor says the cores are hot and it shuts down I am thinking of buying a new pump from pc specialist but if the cores are hot I think the underlying issue is still going to kill the cpu

Not overly aware of water-cooled systems but can you hear the pump spinning, is there any difference in the inlet and outlet pipes for the CPU? Can you hear any coolant being moved around the system? 128 is v toasty, no wonder it's binning itself.

Sounds like the pump has failed. You need to get that cooler swapped out ASAP and dont use the pc in the meantime.

Its not been switched on since the last post, had just enough time to backup my docs and such to D: drive I've ordered an AMD Wraith Prism RGB CPU Heatsink Cooler and some thermal compound which should arrive today then I can see if it really is the pump.

You realise you’ll have to repaste it?

Scratch that ordered the fan ,amazon says undeliverable refunded after 2 weeks and ordered a water-cooled silver fox 120G its here but its missing mounting plate and brackets for the AMD system 😢 returning it tomorrow. Meantime I'm looking at this from pc specialist:
CoolerMaster MasterLiquid Lite 120 High Performance . I trust when I order it tomorrow it will have everything I need to fit it since it is listed on the upgrades choices on the website.
Yes I realise it will need repasting I bought artic thermal paste 3 weeks ago in anticipation of receiving the fan so thanks for the heads up.

Finally sorted MY PC with an upgrade from PC specialist.
been using my PC after 1 month out of commission and its purring like a kitten. thanks for all the help guys I'm a very happy man.
...
Now if I can just get my new order from PC Specialist I will be an extremely happy man. they have no 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 processors in stock for my build. Is there anything in the budget range that can top it in your honest opinion to put in an alternative?( although how £1000) is considered budget I will never know), I know 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 tops the earlier Ryzen 5 which is why I went with it in the first place, I'm trying not to break the bank, I do work in the NHS after all, our pennies are hard earned.

I would strongly advise getting some advice with that spec, immediately there are things wrong with it.
