PC won't boot after power outage, won't boot from USB either

Hi All,

Had a loss of power due to tripped switch the other day and haven't been able to boot my system since. When booting normally I get the screen where you can hit F2 to go to bios but after that empty black, then after a while blue screen.

I tried using the recovery USB supplied and with that I get a loading screen for about 3 minutes, then the PC shuts off and restarts, and back to that loading screen, repeat..

Seems not good :(

System specs below, if anyone has any ideas would be much appreciated.

Couple of things...

Firstly, do you use a surge protector on the PC?

Secondly, with the symptoms, you may actually be really lucky, either simply a corrupt windows which is really easy, or possible the main 512 drive got fried.

But the fact it's giving you BIOS options and display is actually a very good sign.

Plus, I'm right in thinking this system isn't that old?

Firstly, if you go into the BIOS, is it showing your 512Gb boot drive in the boot options?

If it is, then if you can, I see you ordered a Windows 11 USB, you need to go into the BIOS Boot priority, insert the USB and select that as the device to boot from. When that loads:

Step 1. Insert Windows 11 installation disk or USB to your PC.

Step 2. Restart your computer PC and boot from the disk or USB.

Step 3. After the Windows Install now screen appears, click "Repair your computer".

Step 4. Go to "Choose an option screen", and click the "Troubleshoot" option. Then, go to the Advanced options windows.

Step 5. Choose "Startup Repair". After doing so, Windows Startup Repair will start diagnosing your PC. When the process completes, the Windows 11 startup issue might be fixed.

Oh, actually I cut off the specs just before that -

It is plugged into this... I'm not a tech guy.

The system is less than a year old, was on here last Christmas!

Yes I can get into bios and select the Windows recovery UBS that is listed (F8 for boot menu, select USB 3 partition about 15GB, is that right?), the problem is that it won't boot from that either. I get a loading screen with the PC Specialist logo and spinning loading dots for about 2 minutes, then the PC shuts down and restarts and goes back to this loading screen, repeating itself. I can't get to any repair or Windows install screen as in your images.

(Alternatively just hangs. I tried that again and it's not restarting, just hanging on loading screen with PCS logo and frozen loading dots, just leaving it there now for about 10 mins).

That suggests it's not booting from the USB. It wouldn't be the 15Gb partition as that is the actual windows image, it would be the boot partition on the USB, it should list is as a boot partition?

Ok, here's what I've got on my boot priority list in bios, with recovery USB plugged in -

1. Windows boot Manager (M.2_1:512GB PSC etc. (this is the main system right?)
2. UEFI: PXE IPv4 etc.
3. UEFI: PXE IPv6 etc.
4. UEFI: USB Disk 3.0 2.00, Partition 1 (15.5GB)

So what I am doing is hitting F8 for boot menu, and clicking on 4. I think I tried to set boot priority and just put 4 on the top also but will try that also.

So it suggests that windows USB isn't bootable then unfortunately.

Do you have access to another PC? If so you can create an up to date boot disk here (create windows 11 installation media):


Burn that to the same USB, and then see if you can boot from that.

It is possible that it still won't boot, but we have to rule out a flaky install media before assuming that.

So I created a new boot USB with Windows 11 burned to the same USB stick using the media creation tool.

Unfortunately, the same result. Trying to boot using the USB results in a PC Specialist loading screen with loading circle that spins for about a minute and then freezes. I left the PC running and it's been like that for half an hour or so.

Is it possible that the USB itself is dodgy? I can try another one, must be one around here somewhere.

If this is a dead end, any other ideas?

Try another USB stick. I’ve had it in the past that older USB 2 wouldn’t work. A bog standard 32gb USB 3 worked no bother.
