Performance i7-10875h - too low? (benchmarking) [solved by reinstalling windows]

Hello everyone,

I got a Vyper III 15 in June with an i7 10875h and 2070 super (all specs below).
The last few days I inform myself about optimization/undervolting and started benchmarking my system.

I tested my cpu with cinebench r20 and r23 and Timy Spy and got the following scores (details in attached images). Unfortunately it didn't let me inser the tableso here a bit unformatted:

Cinebench 20:
  • Score: ~2400
  • Temperature: max. 65°C
  • Found online values: 3500 (45W) to 4200+ (? W)
  • Comparison to online values: -31% to -43% (!)
Cinebench 23:
  • Score: ~6380
  • Temperature: max. 65°C
  • Found online values: 8278 (45W) - 9489 (62W)
  • Comparison to online values: -23% to -33%
Time Spy CPU Score:
  • Score: ~6400 - 6530
  • Temperature: avg. max. 79°C (spikes), abs. max. 90°C on one core (spike), avg. ~70-73°C
  • Found online values: up to 10800
  • Comparison to online values: up to -60% (!) (unknown if overclocked)
I found out that I have a 45W version, but even for this the scores seem really low. On this forum someone postet a score of 4238 (seems like stock without overclocking/undervolting: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...l-configuration-benchmarks.73797/#post-520778) on the Vyper 17 (same setup, but unknown if 45W or 62W). Is the 15 inch chassis throttling? The R23 values I found online are from an AERO 15, so still pretty much lower but I could not verify if these values are from overclocking.

Also the Time Spy CPU Score seems really low compared to this list: Time Spy CPU Score Comparison.
My Time Spy Graphics Score with 8450 on the other hand is in the average range.

Testing setup:
- all programms except HWInfo and Cinebench OR Time Spy off
- airplane mode (makes no difference)
- operating mode in GamingCenter: turbo (but makes no difference im game / office mode)
- no undervolting / overclocking
- plugged in

The temperature seems ok (or even low?).

So...do I do something wrong or is something wrong with my CPU?
What scores/temps do you achieve?

Thanks in advance!

Your CPU does certainly be underperforming.
I have the Vyper 17 with the same CPU.

On R23 I am getting 9141 and my Time Spy CPU score is 7039.

This is with my laptop profile set to Gaming.

If you run HWINFO64 what are your PL1 and PL2 states set to?

Your max temperatures are really low for those benchmarks?

Thank you for your answer. With running R23 both the PL1 Power Limit and PL2 Power Limit are at 120W (current, min., max.) in HWINFO64.
While testing after turning on the laptop the max. temperature was also only at 60°C while task manager showed 100% workload on the CPU.

The CPU should be getting much hotter than that under a benchmark load but those power limits are fine. When you run R23 can you also monitor either Throttlestop or Intel XTU to see if the CPU is Power Limit throttling?
It shouldn't be because your PL states are normal but it does not appear to be getting hot enough to Thermal Throttle.

I reckon your CPU is being held back by something.

*edit for further information* also can you monitor HWMonitor and let us know what frequencies your cores are reaching.

Throttlestop does not show any Power Limit throttling.

first run with hwinfo64 with columns: [current - min - max - average]

second run with hwmonitor with columns: [value- min - max]

So looking at your HWInfo capture your clocks look really low. I would expect every single one of your max values to be sitting around the mid to top end of 4 GHz and I would certainly expect your average clocks to be a fair bit higher than what has been reported (assuming your capture duration was only whilst the benchmark took place).

You have installed all drivers and software from the download section of your account including GameCenterU and ensured all Windows updates are installed?

Yes everything is installed and up to date.
In order to exclude all potential influences, i am currently backing up the system and will reinstall windows afterwards. So that I have a fresh install, drivers and cinebench / hwinfo64 for benchmarking. If that is not enough I think I will contact pcspecialist / PCZ...

Did you order with windows or install your own copy?

I am pretty baffled to be honest. On the face of it I would have said because its a smaller chassis than my 17" the CPU is being thermal throttled however the temps are no-where near hot enough for that. Then I would point to power limit throttling but you appear to have ruled that out as well.

The only thing I can think of is there is an issue with your chipset driver or possibly the GameCenterU power profiles.

Let us know how the reinstall goes.

Yes I hope I have positive news in a few hours.
What I really want to know is if the CPU is also being throttled while gaming or other heavy duty tasks... I just can't believe that only benchmarking tools are being throttled.

Are you getting decent performance whilst gaming? What sort of games are you playing?

I testet Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (since it's free this week) and get 60fps wiht ray tracing on middle, rest on highest settings and hd textures installed. With ray tracing off I get between 100 to 115 fps. Other apps closed, plugged in and only on laptop without external periphery.
I tried tracking the CPU workload right now. This was after 10 minutes of gaming in multiplayer. My GPU caps at 74-75°C with a clock of 1730 - 1800 MHz.

What do you think about the CPU statistic?

Just wondering, do you have any unknown devices in device manager?
unknown device.png

Indeed I have an unknown device. I have all drivers from my downloads menu installed :(
I have no idea which device this is.

Edit: an analysis with Unknown Devices Identifier shows that it could be the usb-c port -> so thunderbolt? But the thunderbolt driver is installed...

Right-click on it and select Properties. In that dialog click the Details tab. Open the Property pull-down menu and select Hardware IDs. Post a screenshot of that output.

It seems weird to me that you said that changing from turbo to game / office modes doesn't make any difference. It should make lots of difference, especially on CPU only tasks (like cinebench). Maybe the gaming center is not working correctly and your CPU is stuck into a power saving mode (like office)?

Coincidentally I already reinstalled GamingCenter but still no difference.
