Planning to buy a laptop in around a month, got some questions

The 3080 in the Valeon is not that much faster than the 3070 . check the benchmark list in the forum . The only benefit I might see is the added 8 GB VRAM , but that is about that . The Valeon is temp restricted to properly make full use of the 3080 . Only DTR`s are able to maximize the full potential of the 3080.

I checked the 2 gpus a while ago. 3080 is around like... 15% better from what I have checked. I dont see how it isn't a big improvement on a laptop.

I would appreciate not using abbreviations such as DTR since I don't speak tech language.

DTR = desktop replacement, and is basically a laptop that uses a desktop processor, therefore needs more power and is used plugged into the mains, they do have batteries but don't run for long unplugged

I think you missunderstood me , I`m not talking about RTX 3080 vs 3070 in general , but actually the ones in the Valeon specifically . Check this thread and you see why , https://www.pcspecialist.ie/forums/threads/real-users-benchmarks-rank-of-pcs-laptops.76665/

. The RTX 3080 in the Recoil 17" which is as @Martinr36 described a DTR , they have beefier cooling for both CPU and GPU and thus they can reach the max potential . The thickness of the Recoil chassi is about 4.4-4.5 cm which is not far of of twice the one of Valeon , reason being the cooling system ( and added storage slots ) . Hence the RTX3080 in Recoil is 15 % ( or more ) faster than Valeon .
The Valeon while a very fast laptop does not have that extensive cooling system with 10+ heatpipes covering CPU&GPU and thus is being somewhat limited thermally . For the Valeon the RTX 3080 does not do that much extra ... it is faster yes... but only to a small extent . My RTX 3070 Valeon as you can see in the link above is very close in performance in 3DMark to a similar Valeon with same CPU as me , but with the 3080 GPU , very small margins .

Wait so recoil better if I want to get a 3080?

And not even an 100% sRGB....

OK, so me getting a 3080 is a total waste on valeon or its all the gpus that suck?

All this constant new info confuses me more and more. The thing with cases couldn't be more simple huh?

Actually the Recoil 17" do cover 100 % sRGB , 72 % NTSC is equal to 100 % sRGB , just another way of labling it . It does not cover however I believe 100 % Adobe RGB , very few laptop screen do . In terms of the Valeon I`m not saying that the RTX3080 is slow or bad ... it has it`s benefits with twice video memory and it is a few % faster than the RTX3070 , but if it is worth the extra cost is up for you to decide . I`d say that the Valeon and the Recoil 17" is the two fastest laptops PCS is offering atm , so they are still worthwile to get .

My main problem is how better or worse the 3080 is on the Valeon than 70. If its like 3-4 % I might as well go 3070

Also I realised that 6 hours of battery life is at most hopeful 🤣 2 hours seem to usually be the best. Well that's fine, but still the problem of hardware.

Might go for a 15 inch laptop instead but not sure if its better or worse and/or what the size of the screen would be either way (like physical size since I'm not good with inches)

I get around 2.5 hours at most with the iGP activated ( ie the Radeon Vega 8 ) and in " office " mode with the Valeon . But that is mostly due to it´s smallish 62WHr battery . Had it had a larger one I bet it would have made 6-9 hrs .

Honestly, 2 hours is probably more than enough in case of an emergency, but ugh... im still stuck with the hardware ngl. All these different gpu performances making this more difficult than it should

Hellow,
(please accept my apologies for my english mistakes ^^")

As a 17" recoil owner (clevo chassis), I just want to add some words that may help you to choose wich laptop is the better for your needs.
(let's say i'll try to compile the more interesting data for you ^^)
(and, i don't work for pcs or anything and i don't try to sell you something, just to be clear ^^)

If i understood you well, you want a laptop to take with you in university in class ? or you'll let the laptop in your uni room ?

Soo ...

First of all, you may want to take the weight in consideration, the recoil is heavy, like, really REALLY heavy (something like 6.5kg with the 2 power bricks - and brick is the perfect word to define it :D (4.5kg for the laptop and 1kg for each PSU)) even with the appropriate bag (I have the everky titan, and it's still tiring, but, the laptop fit perfectly inside ;) )
Otherwise, the valeon look like more light and it only need one power brick.

To finish with the power brick, note that the recoil can work with only one power brick (and even run game, but il will be on medium or low setting ;) ) but il will need the 2 power brick to charge the battery (and please, don't do the joke about what is a bat-tery :D - fly away :D )

The battery is pretty weak (even if it's a 97watt one) in the recoil because the hardware is a really power hungry monster ... with everything at the lowest consumption, you may have 1h30 max i'd say ... (something like 1%/minute ...)

In second consideration, the price, the recoil will be more expensive than the valeon

In third, the cooling system, as a desktop replacement (the cpu will be a desktop one) the recoil has 10 heatpipe inside and that can cool the laptop from 95 to 45 °C in less than a minute (i tried it for you :D)
The laptop can run pretty hot, but the palmrest and the keyboard will stay cool (like, cold in fact ^^)
The fans can be loud when you play games, but i think it's pretty normal nowadays, especially with the hardware inside ... when you don't play and do office work it will stay silent

In fourth, to continue on the hardware part, i think the gpu may be more powerfull in the recoil than in the valeon (as said @KriSta , it's a question about temp and power). So, a 3080 in the recoil can run pretty well ^^

BUT the cpu in the recoil is an intel one, so it's less optimized (let's be nice with intel XD) than the AMD cpu in the valeon.
(but, it should be noted than, as a DTR, if the next intel cpu line has the same socket, you'll be able to change your current cpu for a new one)

But (yeah, i know it's a lot of "but"), with the intel cpu, you may use an 980pro samsung ssd ...

If my gathering data from internet are good, the sound system inside the recoil is really better than in the valeon.

The screen resolution is better in the valeon.

I don't have any data on the keyboard in the valeon (but as a tongfang one, it may have the same "non fatal" (as peeling letters) problems as the other chassis from this oem), but what i can say it's that the keyboard in the recoil have a pretty nice feeling (and have more rgb than the valeon, and we all know that rgb is a performance booster in game XD)

The trackpad feel nice and has 2 "real" buttons (i have a preference for that kind of thing ^^)

You have 4 ssd slots in the recoil instead of 2 in the valeon, so, i guess, we can say that you'll have more evolution possibility

The two chassis have RAM limited to 2933 Hz
If i'm not wrong, the valeon only has 2 ram slots, the recoil has 4 slots

So, to conclude, i think if your main point is to have a long lasting laptop for games, the recoil may be better (but it will cost you more)
But, if you want a laptop for uni work and course and having gaming possibilities, the valeon may be better

If you want to see what my spec are, you may go to the topic i created before buying my laptop :

I hope this post will be helpfull for you @Conrad-N7

Why can't Recoil be good for uni work as well? I don't mind 6.5 kg as I will probably carry it in my backpack (used yo have 10 when I was younger cuz books and stuff).

While uni usage is important, the main focus is for games and in some instances streaming and video recording

Hello again ^^

Before giving you an answer, if you plan to use the recoil at uni, you'll need a really good backpack (the one i own, the everki titan, may fit you well, it even has a "small" pouch as accessorie that fit, more or less, the 2 cpu and the alimentation cable ^^)

So, then, if the weigth don't bother you, you may use the recoil as well (i know what you mean, about weight, so, so well ... but now that i'm old (i'm 30 XD), i can't do it anymore XD)
But, be aware that you'll need the 2 power bricks to make the laptop work fine ^^

I wrote a review "yesterday", if you want to take a look

Anyway, the major point still remain, it's more expensive than the valeon, so ...
(if i'm not wrong, i think for the "same" spec you wished to put in your valeon, the recoil is 500 euros more expensive, without vat (but with gold warranty) or assurance)

i'm sure that my english is pretty bad, but it's 00h25 and i'm tired, so, please, be nice ^^

The recoil isn't a laptop, it's a DTR, so has desktop processors and as such uses much more power than a normal laptop, battery life is very poor, and they're heavy, as well as requiring the 2 power bricks.

Np, I can understand it so...

What do you mean 2 power bricks? As in buy instead of 1 charger, buy 2?

And yeah, I know about the price, hence why I was thinking about the 15 inch recoil instead... but I dunno

Just the cpu right? Gpu not that much stronger than regular laptop gpu?

It comes with 2 power supplies (chargers) that both need to be connected to power it
