Possible grarhics fault

I have a PCSPECIALIST desktop that is just over 5 years old and the image went from the screen, just a black screen, I thought, graphics card so bought a like for like replacement from Amazon for just over £20 but it still just shows the black screen, any ideas what it could be, changing a graphics card and maybe RAM are about the limits of my PC knowledge.

Do you have a separate graphics out port (VGA/DVI/etc.) on your motherboard as opposed to from your graphics card? If you do, it would be worth disconnecting the graphics card and then trying to boot the PC with your monitor plugged into the other port.

Something else to note, is the PC actually turning on? Do fans start spinning and does it POST (beep)?

The monitor is actually reverting to standby although before I replaced the card it went black but the audio I was listening too continued. After a bit of fiddling I got it working again for a few hours. The fans are spinning and I get a beep just no image on the screen there is no other port on the motherboard to test it

Just out of curiosity are you sure its not the monitor that's dying - I recently had some very similar problems on my second monitor, it would just go black, then I'd fiddle with the monitor cable and the picture would mostly come back until at some point it refused to show anything at which point it got replaced and I now have no issues.
Do you have another monitor you can try it on?

Note: this is just a pure stab in the dark (I knew it had to be the monitor for me cos my first screen still happily showed up, and various amounts of cable changing didn't affect which screen didn't show).

Something else to rule out I guess, does the monitor definitely work (ie its not the monitor that's faulty)?

EDIT: This is what I get for starting a reply and leaving my desk...

Thanks Rakk it was the monitor should have cheched before I ordered the graphics card just got to order a second monitor now for the other PC something very cheap and cheerful. By the way the motherboard had ports for a monitor, possibly disabled in the BIOS to accomadate the seperate graphics card, and at first I plugged the monitor into that then was about to post on kindle that it wasn't the fault when I noticed the error. When the second monitor worked I plugged first one back in and recieved black screen so immediatly knew it was the monitor.
