Power button and it's use

Apologies for asking such a lame question but..

When I am away for a period i like to unplug my computer. Do I have to set the on/off switch ot OFF first or does it not really matter.

Indeed what is the purpose of the ON/OFF switch on the PC - is it just to save you having to unplug.

Well it means you can leave it plugged in so you can earth yourself on the case when playing around inside with no chance of electrocuting yourself
Though to be honest I've never really thought about it
