Question around CPU speed and cooling.

Hi all,

Firstly, I'm a complete tech noob so may not make sense!

I recently got a new PC I9 11900k with RTX 3070TI mainly for MSFS2020 but at certain points I am still getting low FPS (only in certain aircraft/location and I notice my CPU is only running @4.8GHz compared to the boost clock of 5.3GHz?

Is this normal?

Also, do you think my cooling is sufficient enough CoolerMaster MasterLiquid Lite 240 High Performance Liquid Cooler?

I have attached a few screenshots to show you.

Thanks in advance and apologis in advance if it makes no sense.

What settings are you playing at?

A 3080 would just about manage to keep 60fps at full settings at 1080p

If you're playing at 1440p you'll have to adjust settings accordingly.

I'm playing at 1080p. Mainly all on Ultra

At Heathrow for example in the 787 it can go as low as 15/20 fPs and its like a sideshow.

Should my CPU be running at 5.3ghz? Its only running at 4.8Ghz

Yeah, that would be expected, the GPU isn't powerful enough to run it at max settings.

5.3 is the single core thermal velocity boost which is basically marketing nonsense and best ignored. The CPU will rarely reach this and when it does it will literally be for a second or two.

4.8 is the all core turbo boost which is what you'd expect it to be running under load.

Unfortunately Intel chips are really poor by todays standards, and most of the stated speeds are utter nonsense to try and hide the fact that they don't perform very well.

Thanks so you reckon the GPU is the bottleneck?

Also is my cooling sufficient?

As I’ve recently been educated on (thanks @SpyderTracks), it’s not so much that your GPU is a bottleneck, it’s that Flight Sim is a certified system killer. It’ll gobble up whatever graphics card you have, so there’s a requirement to have realistic expectations and to adjust your settings accordingly so that performance doesn’t tank. Have you tried playing around with graphics settings? There’s likely a few that you can drop from ultra down to high or medium that’ll have a big effect on the frame rates you’re seeing without too much loss in visual fidelity.

Cooling is fine if its achieving 4.8 boost

There's no bottleneck, you just need to adjust settings.

MSFS is one of those games that isn't designed to be run at full settings yet, ot won't run at acceptable framerates for years to come until hardware is able to run it.

"Max settings" is a fallacy and kind of defeats the object of pc gaming. Loads of AAA games aren't able to be played at max settings for years after release.
