RAM Issues

The following is an excerpt from the PC spec I recently purchased from you PC Specialist, Order Number: 343389

Case
COOLERMASTER COSMOS 1000 SILVER SILENT CASE (£159)

Overclocked CPU
OverClocked Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-930 (2.8GHz @ max 3.8GHz)

Motherboard
ASUS® P6X58D-E: DDR3, USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, 3-Way SLI

Memory (RAM)
12GB CORSAIR XMS3 TRI-DDR3 1600MHz (6 X 2GB)

Graphics Card
1GB ATI RADEON™ HD 5770 PCI EXPRESS - DirectX® 11

The issue is that when it arrived neither the BIOS or Win 7 (64bit) could see more that 6GB or RAM, on arrival Win 7 only saw 4GB. After a lot of trawling through websites/forums I discovered that this Motherboard has known issues recognising 12GB and flatly will not see more than 6GB of 1600MHz RAM.

After following some tips from I've managed to get the BIOS to see 10GB RAM but only when running at 1066MHz.

I've flashed the BIOS to the latest upgrade, removed the overclock and reset the timings etc.

In short I'm not particularly happy that I was sold a specification that would not totally work.

If I had been told 6GB was the max with my spec I would have been happy, of course this would have pushed the price down.

If the PC had been checked why wasn't the problem raised with me, for example another Motherboard might have solved the issue?

If I with little or no real experience in this field can determine that there is a known fault why didn't the specialists?

Perhaps £1400 isn't enough to ensure top level customer service but it was a lot of my money and I don't think it's too much to ask for an explanation for your actions.

Your thoughts are cordially invited.

not sure to be honest, may be just driver support if you got it to regocnise 10GB but your best giving them a call mate, they will know exactly what the problem is and advise you better. no matter what it will be sorted as quickly as possible.

Hello sac122

As our forum members have already pointed out - this is a new issue which has recently come to light, and the problem has been that the memory detection has been random, so some times the memory is detected as 12GB, and at other times only 6GB. We are waiting for ASUS to release a new BIOS to fix the issue.

To fix the problem, have have discontinued using Corsair memory with this chipset and have listed Kingston 1600MHz, which has been fault free in our testing phases. Please contact our call centre and we will be happy to exchange the memory for you - we can dispatch some for you today for delivery tomorrow.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

I'd STRONGLY advise you to read my ASUS Rampage III Extreme thread where the exact same problem was happening. It is indeed as other's have said a problem with the new x58 chipsets. But i'd also recommend doing all the other usual stuff, checking CMOS battery is ok, untightening CPU cooler,

have you tried XMP + manually entering voltages for DRAM bus etc?

Also, £1400 for 12GB is good :D Mine was £1540 for 6GB but better mobo I guess :D

I've just tested the 1002 BIOS for my mobo, i'm pretty sure ASUS will be working on the P6T BIOS too :) Google this problem and you will see you're not the only one with this problem and that (hopefully) most of the time it isnt hardware related but software :D

EDIT: and yes Corsair apparently has stability issues with these new mobos :p Hoping mine won't need to be replaced but we'll see *fingers crossed*

Update

Update:

Swapped the RAM from Corsair to Kingston HyperX, so far so good everything is fine, 12GB showing.

@Sleinous - Thank you for your advice and I'm sorry to hear about your motherboard issues, seems Asus have some work to do!

@Steveuk87 - Thanks for your advice too! It's nice to know that there are people who know what they are doing and are willing to give clear guidance and input to those of us who aren't so literate.

@PCS - Thank you to you guys as well. I know from experience that not everything will always go exactly to plan and while I was a little upset that my particular RAM problem wasn't spotted during testing or building I was impressed with the minimal hassle to rectify the situation.

Having read some real horror stoies before I selected where to purchase my PC from (I almost bought from a company in Newcastle-Under-Lyme but for the inability to find a review that said they were helpful in exactly this situation) I wasn't holding out much hope for a satisfactory resolution but I am obviously quite pleased with the way things have gone, no arguments just a solution.

Thank you all very much.

Good to hear mate. It's a shame that the Corsair RAM has these issues with the ASUS boards and hopefully they will get a fix sorted asap!
