Random restart

I have just got my pc for 2 months and been observing the random shutdowns for a month. It usually occurs when i just started the pc and it hasn't even reach windows yet and it just shut downs and after a sec it starts back again. Another occurance was when I have finished gaming not during. It usually just happens even when I just browse and not even use the pc for gaming.

I've done most of the testing which includes the following:

- Uninstalled latest update (to check if that is causing the problem)
- Uinstalled antivirus
- Tested out the rams one by one
- Installed all latest update which includes the new update for windows 10 20H2
- Tried plugging into the main socket than an extention cord
- Reset pc 2 times from control panel

Im currently looking at clean installing the windows as my last resort. Altho at times I do hear some one long beep followed by three short one. Been sending most of my recent event system logs to the support but to no avail. At this point im not sure what else to do...

Is this a PCSpecialist machine? Can you post your full specs from the order page?

Yes, it is. Also the computer hasn't got any overcloacks or anything like that. The only app on the computer are steam and the games plus google chrome.

I've stated above that i have tested the rams one by one already and the problem persist.
I know that.

There is a known issue (probably timing) with 4 RAM sticks in an AMD build. Try it with just 2 RAM sticks snd see how it is.

Already have tried playing with rams either one by one or adding one at a time. Basically tried all them at this point. Its been a month that I have been observing my pc. Sometime when it restarts it does it 2-3 times in a row before it functions normally again.

Others may come back with better advice than I - but for starters could you go into BIOS at startup, press F7 to go into Advanced Mode, then right arrow key to get to the Extreme Tweaker page and post a pic of the first few items on that screen?

Pressing F10 will then give you an exit screen to launch back into Windows then.....

@ubuysa - my thinking here is the 3600 MHz RAM possibly - as we've seen PCS set a slightly lower speed on other builds. Would it be worth considering removing the RAM DOCP profile and returning it to non-overclocked?

I had to do a clean reinstall of windows and see how it goes. I don't do overclocking like i said on one of my previous post.

Yes I know that. 😐 It does get a bit frustrating to provide advice if you prefer to second guess suggestions instead.

Your RAM comes at a native speed of most likely 2133 MHz. Then a profile contained in the SPD information within your RAM is then enabled via BIOS - called D.O.C.P on ASUS AMD motherboards which stands for Direct Overclock Profile - the Intel equivalent of XMP - which Overclocks your RAM to provide the 3600 MHz advertised speed the RAM is sold at.

Hopefully you have some luck with your Windows reinstall. (y)

Based on the initial information in the original post it does seem like RAM issue to me too. In fact I had similar problem probably now couple of years ago, for me it wasn't just shutting down/restarting but it would just freeze and I'd have to physically restart/shutdown. I was messing about with the overclocks and I thought I've disabled everything however I ended up disabling/lowering more settings to eventually resolve this. I'd say double check the overclocking settings again, check manually what are the ram speeds showing when you are in the OS then check it from the overclocking menu and compare. Also it wasn't mentioned if you checked the OS logs for clues. Any crash reports or event logs?

This exactly was my problem I think - good info!

I forgot the pic my bad. This is getting me frustrated since its brand new pc and not even a year old lol.

Hope so too. I'll observe again and hopefully it runs smoothly.

Yes, I had a copy of event logs and all that since the support them kept asking for it. The errors mostly are Event ID: 6008 "The previous system shutdown at 19:52:22 on ‎11/‎05/‎2021 was unexpected." There is a day that it doesn't shutdown then suddenly the next day it will restart randomly.

You may actually need to enable some more advanced event logs that are by default not turned on/recording the data in "Event logs". I can look into the details of that if needed but yeah I hope too that you are all good since the reinstall (y)

One thing at a time I suppose - so wait and see how you get on with your clean install first.

I can see from your pic that you don't have DOCP enabled which means your RAM is running at the 2133 MHz expected above and not at 3600 MHz which a bit of a surprise. However, if you continue to have problems then maybe re-read my suggestion earlier - you've taken a photo of the main home page in BIOS rather than the Extreme Tweaker page - which has more settings that would be important to confirm.

go into BIOS at startup, press F7 to go into Advanced Mode, then right arrow key to get to the Extreme Tweaker page and post a pic of the first few items on that screen

Did you update your BIOS at any point by any chance? Or did you change the DOCP settings yourself?

Yeah, hopefully it does the job.

Nope. I haven't done anything with BIOS since i got this pc. All the set-up in here are all from pcspecialist default.

Here are the links hopefull that is what you were asking for:

That’s pretty weird if they haven’t enabled DOCP for you. Your RAM is not operating at the speed you paid for.

Everything is at AUTO which is as it should be for a non-DOCP profile at least.

BUT one things jump out at me:

Your FCLK frequency is set to AUTO but it has not synchronised properly to the Memory Clock. It should be at 1066 MHz (half of 2133) rather than 1200 MHz. Mismatched FCLK and Memory speeds increases latency and can cause some glitches.

If your trouble persists I would try setting the FCLK frequency manually to 1066 if that option exists.

If it doesn’t allow an FCLK of 1066 (I can’t see why it wouldn’t mind you) then you could enable the DOCP profile to facilitate a matching FCLK.

But that’s all down the road maybe - sit on your Windows re-install first and see what happens.....

Been thinking about this one a little more. @ubuysa and @SpyderTracks opinions would be better than mine here so I’d be interested to see what they think:

The new clean install of Windows gives a good clean platform to move forward from - if the problem persists though you have a few things you could try - the order below seems reasonable to me but see what the guys say:

1) Disabling fast startup in Windows, particularly now after the clean install.

2) Running MemTest86 to thoroughly check you RAM stability.

3) Using HWInfo or similar to check CPU and GPU temperatures are remaining within reasonable limits.

4) Given you’ve had one short beep and three long beeps - which generally means a GPU error with ASUS boards I believe - using DDU to ensure you have a clean install of your GPU drivers.

5) Setting your FCLK to 1066 MHz in BIOS to synchronise it properly with your Mem Clock.

6) Consider a BIOS firmware update to the latest version - strictly with PCS’ permission only. At which point you can ask them why they didn’t enable DOCP first time around for you too!

I tried the first option when it was happening but the issue still persist even when I have unchecked it. The fourth info should be one long beep followed by three short. It was like beeeeeep-beep-beep-beep if that helps.

Thank you for your advice @NoddyPirate I’ll see how it goes and try to update here if the problem continues.

Sorry yes - that is what meant to type - one long + three short indicates = GPU realted issue possibly......
