Ryzen 3600 PC Build Order Advice/Opinions

Hi All,

So my trusty PC and its 970 has finally given up the ghost and I was looking to get a new PC altogether.

Problem is, I'm nowhere near technically competent enough with hardware to have any idea what I'm doing here.

I know for certain that I want nothing to do with overclocking etc, just a basic set-up works fine for me. I don't do any video editing or anything creative like that.

The only games I play anymore are things like World of Warcraft, CIV6 and a few really old games. However, I'd like to have something that could play and handle some upcomming titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and whatever comes out over the next couple of years.

With the above in mind, would the following set-up work for my described purposes?

Maybe something like this. I went for the Fractal G case for my PC which is a great budget case - but they don't have it in at the moment. I'm not a case expert, so I'm sure someone can suggest if there is a better option.

This is about £20 over the budget, but should be good for WoW. I play Civ6 on my PC which has the 3600x and a 1660 Super and it plays very fast and smooth. If you already have a copy of windows that you could transfer the licence from - you could save yourself £100 which could go towards a better CPU.

Happy to be be corrected by anyone if I've made any glaring errors.

You could also go for a bit of a hybrid of both mine and the build @LeeMoore86 specced where you go with a GPU that would fit your current monitor but have a strong base so if you wanted to go 1440p / 4K in future you’d just have to get a new monitor and the appropriate GPU...

Thanks both, really apprecaited.

If I could ask a few quick questions:

1 - Is the 2060 Super worth it or in my scenario would I just not see any benefit from it at all? I'm really not bothered by it though I just wanted to better undertand the difference between the two versions.

2 - If I swapped out the 1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA HDD with a 500GB SEAGATE BARRACUDA 120 2.5" SSD, would that make any significant difference to the overall specs? I was under the assumption that SSDs were better that HDDs.

3 - There's a prompt when I click "Proceed" that says the power requirements are less than 650w? What does this mean?

1) To be honest, with your 1080 monitor - I think the 1660 super will give you everything you need for now.
2) If you get the 500GB M2 - your operating system and the games you are playing right now will fit on it easily and will be lightning fast (I've got the PCS 512 M2 and windows boots in 15 seconds. The HDD is just for storage so you don't really need a SSD for that - unless you'd prefer it fo course.
3) Its worth getting a PSU that gives you more power than you need now so you don't need to replace it when you upgrade components in the future.

As I understand it, the only game that’ll really make any use of the 2060 the new Flight Sim 2020. You’ll get a hint of ray tracing on the five or so games that actually have it but at a significant performance hit.

You’ve got one of the next generation of SSDs on the builds myself and @LeeMoore86 did for you, the 512GB M.2 drive. These are way faster! Idea is that you put your OS, programs and your currently played game on that drive and have all the benefits of super fast loading. Then you can rotate the game onto the HDD for storage when you’re done.

PCS estimate that amount of power that the system will draw in use. We nearly always recommend ignoring that and going for a better PSU. The CV units are budget, the ones we’ve recommended are far better quality, have less wires and run cooler, all round better for your system health 👍

That's fantastic, thanks so much to both of you.

I doubt I'll ever need a terrabyte of storage! But it'll be nice to have I suppose. My old PC had a 500gb harddrive and I never even came close to have 250gb on it with nearly 10 years worth of miscellaneous garbage. Most of my stuff is sitting on cloud servers and drives that I access accross my tablet, phone and laptop nowdays.

One last question, really minor, should I drop the extra few £ for a better CPU cooler or is the stock AMD one good enough?
