Ryzen 7 3600X Build for Light Gaming + Video Editing.

Hey,hey... First time poster here.

I know a little bit about PC's having undertaken a Microsoft Certified Desktop Technicians Course many years ago in Milton Keynes, but thought I'd post up what i'm considering buying.

I'm off to study Film Production in January. I edit mostly in 4k and export in 1080p to retain Quality and sharpness.
I don't intend to stream.
I plan to play Rainbow Six Siege on odd occasions, and maybe some CSGO.
(I'm also aware that there are Game Promotions on some parts)

Case: NZXT H500 MID-TOWER GAMING CASE (BLACK) (IS THERE ANYWAY TO GET THIS IN WHITE?)

or the Coolermaster Masterbox MB530P (more Fans = better airflow right?)

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Eight Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.4GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4) ( Is there much point getting the Next one up aka 3800X)

ASUS® PRIME B450-PLUS (DDR4, USB 3.1, 6Gb/s) - (Will the BIOS be updated by PCSpecialist?)

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB) (fancied a little RGB, and debating 64GB)

6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1660 SUPER - HDMI, DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready! (was debating the 2060, is there much point?)

500GB SEAGATE BARRACUDA 2.5" SSD, (upto 560MB/sR | 535MB/sW)

2TB Samsung 860 QVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)

CORSAIR 550W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

STANDARD AMD CPU COOLER

ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT (Wi-Fi NOT INCLUDED)

- I was advised the above specs would be okay for most 1080p/1440p Light gaming and be good for video editing.

Let me know what you guys think.

What's your max budget and what did the above come to?

What monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh rate or make and model if you're unsure?

My thinking on the 2 SSD's is speed. I'm aware its a bottle neck due to using SATA and i'd probably be better off getting an M.2

I was going to just get a standard hard drive for storage but i've had numerous of those fail on me over the years, so unsure.

Max Budget is about 1,500 (not including the monitor) so about 1,800 including the monitor.

Monitor will be the Iiyama 34' Prolite Widescreen Monitor.

UPDATED THE LIST WITH Cheap SSD for booting and an HDD for storage.
Which brought the price down.
I'm by no means an expert haha as I didn't finish the course as I was told i was more of a software guy than a hardware guy haha.

( I have a spare Samsung 1tb SSD from my Macbook Pro) so will likely format that and put that into use as an external SSD)

I appreciate all your time and input.

I would recommend a couple of changes....

I'm not a fan of the case, it's fugly. If you really like it then stick with it. If you like RGB I would recommend the Corsair (Selected), if you're not fussed then the R6 is the perfect choice.

If you're serious about video editing then you're going to want a scratch/cache drive. This is a little tricky with the motherboard you have selected as you only get 1 M2 slot. I changed the motherboard to a better option for similar cash that allows for a second M2.

I've selected what I think would be a fairly good all round storage collection. 1TB for windows/software and a couple of games. 512GB reasonably quick scratch drive, should handle lots of 4K with no real problems. 2TB storage drive for games and any save files.

I've included a modest AIO liquid cooler. The coolers on the Ryzen chips are decent and fair offerings but it's always nice to have a little headroom, especially when the CPU is going to be used intensively. It's not an expensive cooler and it will match the RGB theme very well.

Silver warranty as a minimum.

All the above takes you a little over your budget but every base is covered IMO.

All well and good on the Liquid Cooler but it's really not necessary, if you were going Intel then I'd definitely recommend a cooler so I can do some overclocking but because AMD uses PBO2 it'll just push itself to its max anyway and AMDs boxed cooler is made with that in mind Although an AIO is nice and will keep it cooler it's not really going to be beneficial in any way, it won't increase any performance metrics or anything, but it'll look nice, so I'm going to pass on it in this occasion as it looks FUGLY.

I will invest in one down the line though.

The stock AMD cooler won't hold peak anywhere near as long or as healthily as any decent aftermarket cooler but clearly you're more experienced with PC building so I'll leave you to it :)

My friend is actually a very competent PC builder, and Game developer and has advised me that the stock cooler is fine for now.

Like I have said, I will invest in one when I can but for now, the stock cooler is fine and will serve its purpose fine.
In tests, the AMD cooler is actually nearly in the same league as the Noctua CPU cooler, with CPU temperatures exactly the same.

I also don't intend to overclock, so I fail to see how an aftermarket cooler will really make any LARGE markable temperature differences.

There's also no need to be rude, and such either. Not everyone has the funds straight away and not everyone just wants to drop over 1,500+ on a system.
Maybe be a bit more helpful rather than condescending. It's not really making me want to use PCS if this is the kind of people that inhabit it's forums...

I just don't appreciate the rudeness to be honest when the stock AMD is actually pretty good in itself... sure you're not getting comisson from selling unecessary parts?

Like I said, I will bow to your knowledge, I'm not interested in arguing with anyone. If you get a chance though, post up some 1hr logs of intense video encoding showing temps and throttling, if you don't mind of course. It would help to point others to the thread if we had a conclusion.

Anyway, my advice is above, take it or leave it. Clearly I also misunderstood what you wrote previously, so I must be having an off week.

Max Budget is about 1,500 (not including the monitor) so about 1,800 including the monitor.

I neither work for PCS or am affiliated with them in any way. I'm an enthusiast who enjoys helping out others and talking all things tech, hence why I stick around. I am a customer, the same as many forum users. That being said, if anyone wants to pay commission on £40 AIO coolers I'll wave it in the direction of charity.

I will say, you can take my attitude how you wish. If you have a look at my attitude prior to your response and after it you will see a stark contrast. Take from that what you will, possibly have a reflect on how you came across? Regardless we will be at an impasse I'm afraid. If you wish to receive a better attitude I suggest you adjust yours.

There's nothing wrong with my attitude you justs seem so certain that a cooler is needed so i'll point you in the direction of this video.
Take from it what you want...

FFWd to approx 6 min 30 sec and that pretty much proves my point. Not only will it be throttled and running lower frequency, it'll be cooking too and only held with throttling.

My advice is through experience though, rather than watching youtube.

and then forward to slightly 7.15 and onwards past that and you'll see that the only real advantage to using one is a decrease in noise inside the case...
plus they even said that it won't increase performance in any way except a few percent lol

and your experience must be pretty outdated then...

I give up, if that's what you take from it and all the charts showing the performance differences then that's fine. In a professional application I count the thermal delta as part of the performance characteristics. The AIO with the 360 rad is massively out performing the RGB Wraith in temps and the AIO system out performs or matches in every test. It will add to longevity of the system, performance of the system, cooling inside the case for the other components not to mention running massively quieter.

Why worry about better performance and future longevity when you can save 3% on the build though.

because some people are disabled (like myself) and require the extra money to support themselves, and don't sadly have the extra money to factor in a liquid cooler sadly.

I get your point,i I really do, but for what i'm doing i doubt it'll be a must-have straight away.

I get that, I went £19 over your budget though. I hardly suggested purchasing a £200 cooler, I wouldn't do that unless I thought it was absolutely necessary.

You've selected RGB options that add to the costs far more than the cooler does. These aren't necessary either and the savings could be put towards that support.

If your budget is closer to £1300 then that's fine, state that..... when you stated 1500 I went for what I believed to be the optimum build for that budget, maximising productivity and performance (while still keeping the RGB appearance that I thought you desired given your previous options).... although I went £19 over and really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Where's that coming from out of interest? Would be very interesting to see how even the Prism is equivalent to an NH U14S. Even just looking at it, or anecdotally, there's no way it could be.

This is a good point. The AORUS does forfeit USB 3.1 Gen 2. I suppose that could be had via an add-in card, or one could go for the X470 motherboard.

( I have a spare Samsung 1tb SSD from my Macbook Pro) so will likely format that and put that into use as an external SSD)
What connector does it have? You can probably use it internally (and indeed probably should if you can).

Just to ask, what is the target budget for the build? You posted one around £1500 then one closer to £1300. Obviously you don't want to spend more than you really need to, but what budget are we aiming for?

The liquid cooler in The Scotster's spec was under £50, and will still easily outmatch a stock AMD cooler, and will keep boost clocks on the CPU a bit higher due to how the CPUs operate. It may indeed be affordable to get one. But if you clarify the budget, perhaps it will be easier to suggest specs?
