Screen and Start-up Issues With Defiance Series Laptop

Hi there,

I bought a Defiance Series laptop from PC Specialist back in March & have noticed two issues with it:

1. The screen dims when I open certain software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator & then brightens up again when I switch to Chrome. I've switched 'Game mode' off and I've not been able to find any other power saving, or power-management settings which might be controlling the screen brightness. The function keys which control brightness don't make a difference. Is there another setting hidden somewhere that can stop this? It's making Photoshop pretty unusable as everything that should appear white is appearing grey!!

2. The computer often doesn't switch on after being asleep overnight. I open the lid, press the power button and the keyboard lights up, but the fans don't start and the screen never shows a log in screen, so I have to do a hard restart each time, which isn't ideal if I already have work open etc...

All drivers are up to date & Windows is also up to date.

Has anyone else had these issues and if so, did you find a fix for them?

Thanks, EK

Do any of your function keys work?

And is this working off battery or plugged in?

Have you checked that the Adaptive brightness setting is turned off?

To answer the above questions:

Do any of your function keys work?
Yes, all function keys work - brightness is turned up to the max when it is dimming.

And is this working off battery or plugged in?
Both battery and plugged in.

Have you checked that the Adaptive brightness setting is turned off?
It's surprisingly difficult to find a setting which controls adaptive brightness, but I've turned 'game mode' off. In the advanced power settings I would expect to see something about screen dimming there, but it's only showing options for turning off the display:

Thank you, but as you can see in the above screenshot, there is no option to 'enable adaptive brightness' in the advanced power settings as shown on that link 🤔

Thanks for the links - I've tried all of the methods that I have access to in the link - including the "Turn off adaptive brightness command" - but it's still dimming.
Also still having the power issue when I start-up again after it's been asleep.
Any other ideas /suggestions most welcome! I have a friend who is also having similar issues with their PC Specialist machine and hoping I've not made a mistake..! I had a Lenovo Thinkpad for the last 5 years and never had any issues like this :(
