Second drive in Defiance

Hey guys,

I recently bought a Defiance 15.6" and am starting to wonder if I should have got a decent size HDD as second drive in addition to my main 250GB SSD as it is filling up awfully quick with just a few games.

So, can I simply buy any HDD and install it myself? Or would I need to get somebody to install it professionally? Or is it not possible to do this at all after the initial build?

Thanks!

you can do it yourself BUT the defiance is a special case, as it only supports x2 7mm HDD/SSD or x1 9.5mm HDD/SSD due to its small size
if your 250gb SSD is 7mm thick then you can put an HDD that is 7mm (not that many models of 7mm HDD in the market though, so not many choices)

Am I correct that the Defiance 15.6" is a Clevo P650SG chassis? It looks like it from the PCS website (http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptops/clevo-laptops/40/). In which case, the Clevo website seems to suggest that it can fit a 7mm with a 7mm or 9.5mm drive in the second slot (http://www.clevo.com/clevo_prodetail.asp?id=737&lang=en). That is also backed up in this thread on a different forum I found (http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-sg-sager-np8650-51-52-owner´s-lounge.763159/) "SG chassis is thicker, thus allows for the 9.5+7 mm option in parallel".

only for the 17" model, the 15.6" only supports 7+7mm
the p65xSG is the gtx 980m model
the p65xSE is the gtx 970m model
HDD space only depends on the size of the laptop and not the model

edit: if you have a 2.5" HDD around you can simply open the back and see if it fits, but if you are going to buy, buy a 7mm for this model unless you use the m.2 for SSD

Great, thanks!

Is it easy to install myself? And in terms of installing some of the programs I already have installed on my SSD, will I need to uninstall them and reinstall them on the new drive, or is there a simple way to transfer them across without any issues? First time I've dealt with 2 drives in the same

You'll need to uninstall them and reinstall them on the new drive. You can't transfer programs unfortunately, when installed, their paths are coded into many places including the registry. They also spread files much broader than just the program folder.

I've just ordered the WD Blue 7mm 1TB drive. Will I need anything else other than the drive itself to install? Some of the places I've read online have mentioned about getting caddy's for the new drive to hold it in place. Is this required for the Defiance or it is just a case of plugging it in on the inside and closing the laptop up?

it should be just a case of plugging in, we wont know until you try it, either way the solution wont be hard so i wouldnt worry too much
