Short Story - A call to execution

The pigment screen reflected light into the visual receivers of Reedar’s eyes. The eyes emitted a dim light which was absorbed by the pigment screen and what information that was contained in the reflection was processed by his operating system. The memes on the screen danced and refreshed at 80 beats per second allowing a more than adequate approximation of realistic motion that tricked his processing unit into believing what he was looking at was real. His appendages squished and popped the cumbersome organic fingerboard controlling what was seen on the screen, while the main processing unit whispered under the desk breathing in and out rhythmically. It wasn’t an expensive or powerful Pigment Display Thinking Organism but the horrid breathing sounds of the higher performance machines distracted Reedar and he preferred something closer to silence for his own personal use. It wasn't like he couldn’t afford one of the high spec expensive thinking machines, he had a very prestigious job as a neural net programmer and was a master in biological mechanics. He worked in the cutting edge of organic mechanics and he was a lead organ cultivator at a world leading technical giant. Non-disclosure agreements would ensure he never talked about his work to anyone who asked but lately he'd been feeling dissatisfied with his work and had begun to look for inspiration elsewhere.

“Secret History, Ancient Ancestors -- The Truth”

Searching on incredible arterial sites he would watch conspiracy visual collections one after another downloaded to his thinking machine from the world wide synapse. Normally Reedar would avoid such trivialities and absurd stories but because he was finding it difficult to shutdown his Operating system lately he was spending the nights exploring the bloodways trying to pass the time. He popped the joint of his fingerboard and cracked one of the knuckles and the visual collection began to display vivid information on the pigment canvas. The information was low production value, publicly shared and had dubious and somewhat schizophrenic origins. The narrator memed across several topics and the pigment skin began to phase through various theories and fringe scientific ideas. The low power mouths on the desk cleared their throats and began to narrate. The sound quality was pretty bad and wasn’t too great to listen to but the voice began it’s introduction to the information with confidence and gusto.

“You are about to go on a journey. A journey into the lost histories of our world. Everything you know is a lie perpetuated by a shadow government who wishes to hide the truth from the everyday people."

Reedar’s eyes dimmed as his memory parity corrected what he had just heard. He had a micro restart due to a lack of sleep. He willed himself hard to maintain an awareness and concentrate on the theories being presented to him. He felt angry momentarily at how stupid the video was and didn't bother repeating the sections he had just missed. He thankfully considered that it was probably a blessing that he had a short nap due to the chronic insomnia he had been suffering and allowed the video to continue uninterrupted.

“Science has been unable to fully explain how these ancient plastic carvings came to be. Found in prehistoric Adamite civilisations. These ancient idols contain secrets that modern science cannot explain. Their surface is too smooth to be fashioned with the primitive tools available at the time. The parts are perfectly interlocking to millimeter precision, the round sections are perfectly spherical and could not have been fashioned by the primitive people and the knowledge of plasticurgy available.”

Reedar observed an ancient idol carved out of plastic. It had a red body and blue legs, it’s vaguely Adamoid shaped body was covered in a criss cross of black lines and it had blank white eyes. It’s arms and legs were fully posable and the intricacy of the design would be explained in further detail on how the objects were in fact from a far ancient time fashioned by the gods of the early Adamoid civilisations. These were not naturally occurring plastics and either the method of their creation had been lost to time or they had existed from a time before known time.

“This god gained his power from a mythical creature called spider who consumed him and gave him godlike powers. Similar figures have been uncovered all over the planet, all made from plastic, about the size of an Adamoid hand. Across the planet, the Ancient pantheonic gods of the ancient era all have this same bizarre plastic forming technology involved in their worship. For example, this black god with two horns on his head is commonly understood to represent the revenge for the death of his parental elder gods who symbolise wealth. His enemy is humour and his idol will bring determination and protect one from pranks and bad jokes. The commonality of these figures and the wide spread findings suggests that these ancient cultures were once connected somehow and were in fact in communication with each other. Modern science will disagree and instead point to the discrepancies to prove that they do not share a common origin. This is a very ignorant interpretation.”

The video made several suggestions that many historic structures were in fact repurposed and had originally been built by the ancient forgotten gods of the Adamoids. One example explored the finding of a giant water damn with a strange composite of stone not found anywhere surrounding it and with a rust residue found inside the internal chambers suggesting this may have been ancient living quarters. Why on earth ancient people would want to build such a monumental structure with only a miniscule amount of living space inside suggested it may have been created by ancient royals. Why they would want to block the water which offered barely any utility for an Adamoid baffled historians and they believed that the blocking of the water may have held some religious meaning or perhaps in order to create more living space below, despite there being ample space surrounding the damn.

Another segment sought to debunk the officially accepted narrative on how plastic was created at the bottom of the ocean on account of how the ocean contains the most amount of plastic. This was the most widely accepted theory based on this simple observation, it was difficult to prove or disprove either way due to the large expanse of time and the measurement of the geological layers that suggest that plastic did not always exist and had been created later after the Planets creation. The exact process is still unknown but many still believe an alternative school of thought. Since plastic cannot normally be created naturally they regard that as proof that the world was created by Zos. Again, its hard to prove either way so the debate continues on. But, science is slowly winning. It is expected they will observe plastic being formed in the wild at some point and it will lay the whole topic to rest once and for all.

Zocism is currently the world's largest religion and Reedar was no longer a follower. In the back of his mind the idea of an afterstate comforted him and he would wish it was true but there was no evidence of such magic in his world. The Zocists follow a very vague alternate version of history which exists in fragments supposedly found on data disks from the ancient times. The magnetic data has been lost and scholars from around the world in a previous era sought to decode the messages within and wrote the Zos Manual. The disks still exist but the information that may have once existed on them is gone and offers no real concrete proof either way. The origin of the disks are also hard to explain as they also follow the same bizarre construction methods that are currently lost to this era. Reedar's mind internally mouthed off the Genesis of the world according to the Zos Manual.

“In the beginning there were zeroes on the face of the ram

The pointers moved across the directories

The voice of Zos said init

And there was an execution in the memory.”

There is a lot of this world that doesn’t make sense but if Reedar ever bought any of these doubts up at work he’d probably be laughed at for being superstitious at best or have his head sent to the Doctor to have a virus scan to search for corrupted files. Zocists believe that after death there exists an internet where our Operating systems will be backed up and we can traverse an unlimited amount of information and simultaneously exist in many places at once through some magical decentralised data system created by the ancient gods.

When Reedar was younger he used to believe in such things but it felt like society was progressing faster and faster with new technological breakthroughs. Reeder remembers when thinking organisms in homes were rare and neural net speeds were a lot slower and not exactly consumer friendly. Nowadays nearly every Adamoid carries around their own miniature thinking organisms on their external heatsinks. Completely arteryless, with their own contained organ system and high density pigment display. Telepathic communication as also rapidly advancing and as soon as a better power supply could be found that was more efficient than carbohydrate cells the lifespan of these devices might be extended between restarching. They also tend to lose heat rapidly and need to be held in a particularly warm section of an Adamoids external heatsink in order to maintain optimal functionality.

An alert on Reedar’s screen pulsed alerting him that he had to get up for work in 4 hours. He might not get a full shutdown tonight but he could hibernate and defragment his mind for a few hours so that he was able to function properly at work tomorrow.

His eyes dimmed and his taskmaster started ending all non vital processes.
