Spec for a PC that can handle 3-D modelling and graphic design?

Hey everybody :)

Just wondering if anyone could check if this spec is worth the money and would work well in running Autodesk Maya and other programs such as Mudbox, Photoshop and Adobe After Effects... Basically 3-D modelling and graphic design programs... (If so, I would love to purchase from PC Specialist) :)

Whilst making this spec I checked Autodesk's website and I think I have matched the graphics card and processor with their recommendations properly, but if anyone else would like to advise different components then I'd love to know :)

I would appreciate any advice because I'm not really a bright spark when it comes to PC specs like you guys :p

Thanks!

Hi mate,

I would be putting together a 3D modelling workstation / graphic design (3ds max 2011 + Photoshop + AE + Premiere), so pretty much the same what you would be using.

CPU - change to Xeon Quad core E3-1230 or 1240! so you would get extra 4 threads. E3-1220 has only 4 cores / 4 threads, you'll pay extra £30 :p

Memory (RAM) as much as possible, I am working currently on workstation with only 8gb of ram and it's a joke! 16 gb for graphic design is a minimum !
I will speak with pcspecialist guys tomorrow for option of 2x8gb instead of 4x4gb sticks, as next year I will add extra 16gb (can't afford for 32gb right now). Such system would be future proof.

Graphics Card : here get's a bit tricky. I think I would go for 1280MB GTX 560 TI 448 CORE (wanted to go for Quadro 2000 but it's just too expensive). I have read a lot about quadro cards, but with AMD firepro don't know if they would accelerate as good as nvidia cuda based cards (video encoding).

Please let me know what choice have you made.

Regards.

Im not sure about a pc for 3-D modelling and graphic design, so i don't want to suggest the wrong CPU and GPU. :/

But, i can recommend a Caviar Black as a 1st HDD. They have fast boot times and file loading :)

Also, you could put a Caviar Green HDD as your second HDD if you needed the extra room. These Green drives power down when not in use, so save on power, but are slower than blacks due to them powering down.

Also, you could go for the Tripple copper CPU cooler for £19, watercooling maybe a little overkill for your rig, unless you overclock it. Or alternatively, you could go for the Titan Fenrir CPU cooler for £39. Very good cooler, and looks the part.

Don't forget Silver warranty for £5. Well worth it :)

Hope this helps shed abit more light :)
