Surround Sound for HTPC

Hi all,

Just received my HTPC from pcspecialist (thanks Mantadog for the assist), works like a dream, the only problem I have is that I seem to be missing surround sound when connected to my yamaha amp and projected onto samsung tv.

I have connected the HTPC via hdmi to the amp which is then connected to the tv. I can get 2.1 from the sounds of it but nothing more. I am using XBMC as the media player to try and play DTS-HD and DTS Master Audio.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

OH MY GOD! NOT YOU AGAIN

Oh hai, sorry didn't realise you were listening. :)

erm I really suck at sound (among many other things) it always beats me and I just end up crying in a corner because I have no idea whats going on...

I did find this thread http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=128480&highlight=bitstreaming detailing how to get around a problem raised in a separate thread about not getting 7.1 to work...

Unfortunately that's as far as my help will extend on this occasion otherwise I will just make it worse :p

Not sure about XBMC, but I know I sometimes lose the surround sound from my PC to my amp. In Windows at least, to fix it, I right click on the speaker icon, go to 'Playback Devices' then I right click on the device (it shows as MRX300 which is my AMP, yours will probably show as the Yamaha amp) and click 'configure speakers' you can tell it that you are connected to a 5.1 system then and 'test' each speaker.

As I said, I'm doubtful that this will help unless XMBC works on top of windows (I've never used it so have no idea).
