System Advice

Hello Everyone

I have worked out the system I'm going to be ordering and I wanted to check of there was any red flags people can see. I also have a tiny bit more budget so any suggestions on an upgrade would be welcomed.

The system will be used for software development and moderate gaming (not like massively up to date) the main games that would be played are
Terratech,
Beamng,
Minecraft,
Roblox (both play and studio),
Jurassic world evolution

Plus other similar types of games.

Thanks in advance :)

Knowing your monitor spec (make and model or resolution AND refresh rate) of the monitor you're using or plan to usewould be very useful! And also your maximum budget and if anything needs to be included in that budget e.g keyboard and mouse, monitor etc

I’d suggest a bigger PSU (750w at the very least) so your PC has a longer life-span and you have space to upgrade in the future. Also, up the warranty to silver warranty as its only £5 and gives you 11 extra months for collect and return, and finally, there’s a sticky thread for the issues of AMD CPUs with 4 RAM Sticks, so I suggest you take a look at that.

Also, a bit of an irrelevant question I hope you’re okay with answering - are you a developer on ROBLOX?

Maybe replace one of the HDD with an m.2? you wont need 4tb of hdd.
Thanks, I do have an M2 drive the two mechanical drives are intended to run as a mirror raid to guard against a disk failure killing all of my data. So when it is operating there will be just 2Tb of space but everything is written twice

Hello Junior and thanks for your reply. The monitors I am using are 3 Samsung which have a max resolution of 1080P so the monitor is nothing special. I could squeeze another 200 maybe if the benefit was good enough and I already have keyboard and a mouse so it is just the base unit I need nothing more.

Hello and thanks for your reply

Thanks for your advice on the PSU and the silver warranty I have updated my quote to include those items. I will have a look at the thread with the 4 sticks, I have not looked already but I think its probably to do with AMD not supporting quad channel ram and if it is I will armed it.

I would not say I am a Roblox developer, I am a software developer for financial institutions but my boy loves Roblox so we have been coding it together. I am getting quite decent at it as programming experience certainly helps. I am kind of using Roblox dev as a way to get my son into programming while having fun :)

No problem! Hope you’ll be happy with your build when it arrives😄.

Thats interesting - I assume you’re learning scripting with Lua code in studio. I dont really play ROBLOX anymore I just trade on it whenever I feel like doing so. If you learn Lua Code, then maybe you and your son could begin to make a game if thats in your interest, or you can keep it as a hobby and learn some fun little coding for yourself and your son🙂

Do you do a lot of multi-core dependant work? Because I can't help but think you could get a better deal if you went for the six-core 5600X instead. There is more than a £200 difference between them when you consider that the 5600X has a cooler included, while the 5800X needs one (and a better one than the PCS FrostFlow at that).

I'd also counsel against the Raid 1 setup. Raid is not a backup, so you're adding a lot of complexity to your system and would still have to put a proper backup solution in place. I'd go for a second SSD to store games and current projects on.

If you go for the 5600X and this storage configuration (and lose the unnecessary soundcard), you can also upgrade motherboard, case, power supply and still come in £80 below your original build. To my mind this will be a much more suitable build for the long term (e.g. if you decide you want nicer graphics in the future).

Thankyou for your input. My work requires a lot of cores when compiling my builds but also what is quite important to me is single core power. Some of the toolchains I use are not very modern and do not utilise multi core processing and that is why I was looking at the 3.8Ghz clock speed. I will look at the comparison of the two processors :)

That's the thing, it isn't just the two processors. It's the overall system: if you spend £200 on upgrading to the 5800X, you are cutting back on other key elements, important both now and in the future. I'd rather have an uncompromised 5600X setup than a compromised 5800X setup.

Also, the ideal graphics card for you now is the 3060, launched today. It will be far ahead of the 5500 XT. You may have to wait for it, though 🤷‍♂️ If you put that into the build I suggested, it comes to £1533.
