System freezing - suspect GFX card problem?

Gaming PC works for all mundane tasks but while playing World of Tanks, the display froze - I have no control, and no knowledge of what's going on in the game.
The last sounds loop through speakers. Trying to switch to desktop, bring up task manager does not help as I cannot see them through the frozen game-play screenshot.
Alt-F4 will not change the state. Windows-key shows desktop mouse pointer, mouse-over indicates when it is hovering over the text-input box on my task bar, but shows nothing else.

I am eventually resigned to switching the system off at the front panel switch.

This happened once, then two weeks later again, then a week later and now: when I start the game, a short burst of high-pitched scratchy buzzing noise is heard through my speakers and I am unable to enter the game, and unable to leave the start-up splash.

What I need to know is where to look for system error messages, crash reports and the like so I can call for help with TS.

Many thanks in advance.

Windows 10 Home (although this happened twice under Windows8.1), 16Gb ram, Intel i5 4690k, GeForce GTX 970
and the only gfx intensive game I play World of Tanks.
