Thinking of Upgrading My Current PC . (I want to play RDR2 on max settings)

Budget: £800 (I can squeeze out another £200)

Bought my PC from PCSpecialist over 4 years ago. Thinking of upgrading it. Should I upgrade the CPU first or the GPU?

My current CPU: Overclocked Intel® Core™i7-6700k Quad Core
My current GPU: (SLI 2x) NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080

With I my current set up, I can run games like Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider on max settings in 1440p with 60 FPS.

But my pc is struggling to keep up with newer games. I get less than 30 FPS (like 15-20 FPS) on games like Red Dead Redemption 2 in max setting on 1440p.

I've upgraded gpu before but never upgraded a cpu by myself before. Worried I might mess something up and ruin the computer. I am more leaning towards buying a 2080 Ti graphics card.

(As I am writing this I just found out that the 3080 is out and already out of stock :( )

Bound to be wrong here, but I'd doubt it's worth doing much to your CPU and even if you could put a different chip in you may not see a great deal of difference tbh. A 2080 Ti is an upgrade path for sure vs 2 x SLI 1080's. I would say buy a 3000 series card, basically the same price as the previous gen, however getting hold of one is gonna be the issue.

How much ram? you need 16 gig if you have 8
Are you dead set at sticking to 1440? or would dropping to 1080 be an option?

64 GB RAM. I have more than enough.

I would like to stick to 1440p. All my monitors are 1440p. 1080 doesn't look as good after you get used to 1440p.

Don't think it's worth upgrading the CPU at all just yet.

I'd just go for a GPU upgrade, I'm guessing your PSU is enough if you've got 2 x 1080's in there, a 3070 would be a worthwhile upgrade.

I am not sure if my PSU is enough. It's 750W. I hear that the 30s series takes up a lot of juice.

I am not gonna get the 3070. I will either get the 3080 or wait a few more months (save up more money) and get the 3090. I definitely need a new PSU if I get the 3090. I hear that the power usage spikes above 350W and the computer shuts down even with recommended PSU.

750w will be fine for the 3070.

For the 3080 it may run, but 850w would be better.

3090 would be completely pointless.

What monitor do you have, what make and model?

Which monitors would you recommend?

I was planning on getting a 4k monitor next year after upgrading the graphics card.
If getting 4k it will cost over £800 for 144hz which is what you’d need for the 3080 to make any use of it.

For the 3080 you need:

4k 144hz starting around £800
1440p 240hz starting around £600
1440 superwide around £1200

My shopping list grows...

GPU: 3070 or 3080
PSU: 850W or 1000W
Monitor: 1440p 240hz or 4k 144hz

Hopefully the prices will go down as I save up money...

Cyberpunk 2077 system requirement is out.

I made up my mind. With the aim of playing with Ray Tracing Ultra Settings, I'll buy

GPU: RTX 3080
PSU: 850W Gold
(next year)
Monitor: ROG SWIFT PG27UQ (4k 144 Hz)

I already have the recommended OS, Processor, Memory and Storage.

I should have enough money by my birthday in start of February. Only problem now is that nothing is in stock. Even the monitor I had my eyes on is sold out on Amazon.

Can I order parts on PCSpecialist? I don't see the option to order parts in the main website.
I have the option to "upgrade this order" but that only shows old parts from 4 or 5 years ago.

I would give PCS a call, they should be able to supply you with parts.
