Thoughts on new setup

Planning on a new setup.
Usage will be mainly for games and software development (will be running a bunch of linux vm's to simulate a distributed hadoop cluster and some distributed databases).
Question:
Is 10940X overkill for my use case vs i9-9900K?

Will Corsair H150i keep the chip cool enough if I decide to overclock (up to 4.6GHz - 4.8GHz on all cores)?

What's your budget for this? I would probably aim at high end Zen2 for this build. Definitely not Intel, but the toss up is between Zen2 and Threadripper2, depending what the spend is.

For cooling, the H115i Platinum will be good for the Zen2, for the Threadripper2 you want a 360mm rad on there.

Overclocking is not really advised on the AMD platform though so you would just let the AI manage the boost.

Budget is £2.5k to £3k.
I did check out the AMD chips (Threadripper 2990x and Ryzen 9 3950X).
Threadripper seemed overkill on the core count and didnt seem as good as the 10940 in gaming performance.
I am very tempted by 3950X but iv just never had an AMD before.

H150i is a 360mm rad so im hoping it should be good for cooling with overclock.

3950X would definitely be my choice from a gaming perspective. It does it all, and the high core count would have you covered.

Paired with the H115i Platinum and a decent case would see an excellent base.

Iv taken your advice and just ordered 3950X setup.

I would consider the Firecuda M2 2TB drive (just click additional storage options and it will come up)... rather than the QVO.

Also, you don't need the arctic compound, the stock stuff on the Corsair is pre-applied and fantastic. I would definitely drop this.

The exhaust fans can also be dropped as the H115i Platinum has dual exhaust fans on the cooler.

Other than that, that looks fantastic..... although I can't help but think it would look better in a 500D SE case :p

That's a monster. I would still recommend dropping the Arctic paste though :)
