Unable to connect a microphone

Though I have had my PC some years and been very happy with it, I have not needed to use a microphone untill now as I wish to Skype the Grandchildren. I have purchased a combined webcam/microphone and the video works fine and I can hear the other party ok but they are unable to hear me. I have checked that I am using the correct socket (as I know the three frount and back are similar), I have also tried a separate microphone. I have checked the drivers are up to date and looked at the settings on the control pannel for the sound card. On the recording (microphone tab) it says no recording device installed.

Please advise.

Regards

Graham

This Is for windows7 & I think vista if I remember correctly,
If you have xp post back because the settings are different.
right click volume icon on the task bar(or open "sound" in control panel)/recording devices/
if there are 2 microphones showing, disable the one not in use,
right click on the one your using/properties/select levels tab/set volume level.
