What monitor do you have resolution & refresh rate or make and model, what games do you want to play and what's your budget
i have an asus vx278 with a desktop resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a refresh rate of 60Hz and well to be honest theres no definite set budget it's just for suggestions for people who know more about computing than myself..... i'm an avid gamer but not immensely clued up on gaming pc builds as a whole ... i knew my one would be good for quite some while, i just want to get some suggestions

many thanks

Agreed. I wouldn’t touch it, it should easily be getting 60fps at 1080p, in fact... i imagine a 1080 can hit 120fps, so maybe a new 1080p monitor, is the upgrade you need.

The 1080 is actually a brilliant GPU and still crushes most titles at 1080. If you want to upgrade to a new 1440p monitor you can think about it then but if you are happy gaming at 1080 I'd leave it for now. It's also a bad time to be buying new graphics cards.
