Upgrade to 32gb ram?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some suggestions on a potential upgrade. My PC seems to be struggling a bit whilst playing Alan Wake 2. I cannot turn on ray tracing as it stuns FPS significantly. I don't know the actual frame drop but it's noticeable enough to ruin the experience.

I was looking at upgrading the ram to 32gb as it's only a £50 upgrade but would this make any difference or is just the fact that the graphics card is a few years old now and technology has moved on?

any advice would be really appreciate and thanks for your time in advance :)

as you can tell I'm not at all PC savvy so apologies if none of that makes sense :ROFLMAO:

BTW I'm using a Samsung G9 Odyssey 5120x1440

Definitely worth having 32Gb RAM nowadays for most new games.

But Alan Wake is extremely hungry, and you're around 4k resolution, so even a 4090 wouldn't be getting 120fps on that resolution.

Again thanks for all your help mate. I'll be hitting the order button shortly. I assume ram are relatively easy to install? Last time I placed ram into a motherboard was in 1995 🤣

Hasn’t changed much to be honest, you’ve just got release catches at both ends of the dimm slot, when putting them in you usually use a little gentle force until the catches click back into place, it’s very easy

I have a 5800X and use a 4K monitor, but otherwise, our systems are not far off identical. I upgraded from 2 x 8gb to 2 x 16gb a few months back and it's made a big difference in a lot of games. Games that had slight micro stutters suddenly had more stable frame rates and games that were smooth are even smoother than before. I don't use the various frame rate tools, so couldn't give you any exact data - most of my gaming I do by how a game feels, and can definitely notice the difference going from 16gb to 32!

That being said, I typically don't touch ray tracing unless I'm using DLSS or FSR!

Thanks for this! I was looking at the 2x 16gb in case I need to upgrade again in the future. Roughly around £80 in comparison to £50 for the 2x 8gb.

Do you think that in the next 5 years we will need more than 32 gb ram?

I was playing with the settings on Alan Wake 2 and it plays and looks great on medium settings with DLS on quality but ray tracing off.

I'm definitely going to upgrade the ram just in two minds between 4x 8gb or 2 new 16gb sticks.

My general feeling is that while consoles are at 16gb, we're unlikely to need more than 32gb as Windows is probably more resource hungry than OS than whatever proprietary OS the consoles have. Once the PS6 comes out, there might be a case for more than 32gb, but for now, I suspect we'll be fine.

I would need to rely on Spydertracks on this as I'm not certain, but I think 2 x 16s performs better than 4 x 8s.

Thanks for your input. Did you order yours from PCS? looking at scan computers the price is the same.

For the sake of £30 and depending on spiders comments, I'll go for 2x 16.

Also. If I went for 2x 8gb would this course performance issues if all the ram are single/dual? Would they all need to be quad?

I might have misunderstood this though 🤣

I would definitely say 2x 16 is better. It’s dual channel memory so works best in pairs. You want 3200MHz optimally or 3600MHz max

Yep, should be plug and play. Be sure to plug these DIMMS into the same slots that are currently in use as you have to fit them in the correct slots depending on how many there are.

No, not yet, my current system wouldn't be able to run it, certainly not at the G9 resolution, but I think the game requires mesh shaders to run properly so my GPU wouldn't handle it too well anyway.

But I'm going to be upgrading as soon as I'm settled in a new place early next year and will jump on it then.

It does look amazing though, the graphics look phenomenal, and I loved the story in the first game, it was reminiscent of some of the old classics in that respect which I feel is often lost on newer titles.

Fair enough. Out of interest, what are you looking upgrade to?

The story so far is brilliant. The music, sound effects and graphics truly are amazing. I updated the monitor and it feels much brighter. Did you notice that on the latest update?
