Upgrade?!

Hi people,

Wasn't sure which thread to post this in. Couldn't find a clearly defined upgrade thread from original purchase.

I'm still running a 1080p monitor, so aside from upgrading to 1440p, what else could I do? I mean it's slightly noisy and in the recent summer temps at 40c it ran slightly warm. But I'm happy with the pc overall, just trying to think of ideas for the future. The fps for warzone etc was at like 120-140. It runs AoE two on ultra pretty much fine. Just thinking on longevity, maybe more eco power consumption?

No major budget constraints, but not looking to spend massive amounts atm.

Upgrading is done because performance isn't where you need it to be.

So where is it lacking, what area is it that you feel needs improvement?

Generally if you're upgrading anything in a system within 3 years of purchase (aside from perhaps the GPU), then you're doing something wrong, or didn't spec it correctly in the first instance.

Well as I mentioned, it's a little louder than I expected, and in the high temps (which I never expected to be 40c for multiple weeks in the UK) it ran a little hotter than I expected. Otherwise its perfect. I'm also struggling for ideas for myself for Christmas, so thought I could aim to slowly upgrading over time.

Fix ur fan speed 😂 mines dead silent untill I play a game (low spec game) and even then its quiet. Its always loud until u set it or have u set it bro

Mate, in all honesty I have it set pretty much on full speed. Can't get my head around iCue software properly and it's janky settings half the time. I had the pc built and setup, as much I I'd like to think I'm good at computers, I'm not and I know not to mess about too much.

Maybe I'll look into some videos though.

I would say just concentrate on a decent 1440p 144Hz monitor. The step up from 1080p to 1440p is not small, it's a giant leap, far far better gaming experience. Do it right and get a decent screen with HDR1000, the worst thing you can try and do is budget every component, splash out, push the envelope so the system has room to grow.

If it's running loud, you just have to optimise your fan curves on GPU and cooler, out of the box they're normally noisy.

Deffo not 3 years, maybe 9months or so. I have two settings, quiet and full speed, usually on full speed just to keep things cool, I have headphones on most the time so I don't notice lol

If you're having to run things full speed to keep it within operating limits there's something wrong with the system that needs fixing. That shouldn't need to be done.

What temps are you considering too high?

I think it's still within operating limits anyway, but this was during the 40c temps we had, just haven't changed it back. The settings it had initially seem to ramp up at 40/50c the highest I've seen it go is over 60c

Like I said, I'm no expert. It was setup by PCSpecialist, so the assumption was it would be semi-decent.

I'm open to learn here, and will go for screens first and look to upgrade a bit further in the future.

GPU's can go up to 90C mate, usually operating between 70-80 if you have your fans on full blast all the time of course it'll be much lower than this but pretty unbearable

Any ideas where I could find a decent video on setting fan curves in iCue software?

I'll get to setting it a bit more quietly for my family lol.

U set the fan speed in bios I have my fan lowest until 32c then gradually raising. My cpu barley raises past 37c and normally idles aty 28. Gl bro

Yeah I get you can do this, but I have absolutely 0 experience. Don't want to start messing with something BIOS too much. I can adjust mine with iCue, as when I set it it does change. I mean I'm open to trying it, so will have a search on changing my bios settings

stick to setting them in icue, doing it in bios only works on fans connected to motherboard headers

@MicKor if you're unfamiliar with PC maintenance and design, please don't give out bad advice, it's better to remain silent and learn when new on a forum than giving out bad advice and misleading people.

The biggest upgrade you're going to have is to go for a 1440p display. There are some great deals right now.

The MSI MAG2724QRF-QD is currently £399. The ASUS VG27AQ1A is £219. Both are great value.

Your existing PC will be great for either.

The issue I had with iCUE, was that it was primarily geared towards setting fan speed based on CPU/Coolant temperature. But if you're gaming, it's more likely that the main source of heat in the case is from the GPU, rather than CPU, espec if you're gaming at 1440. You could set up your front fans to be linked to GPU and your top fans (assuming top mounted radiator) to CPU, but that's not going to be optimised.

I use Fan Control, with the case fans all connected to the motherboard fan headers, and not the Commander Core/iCUE. Gives me much more control. But maybe a starting point for you is to create some custom curves in iCUE, to try and get a good balance between thermals and noise. I found this article to be quite useful.

Thanks for all the info, will deffo be aiming 1440 screen first then. As for cooling, thanks for the article, I'll be going for iCue curves first, the other way is a bit in depth for me, I don't hard-core game like I used to, so I'm sure it will be sufficient for now.

Don't forget you can make more than one custom curve, so sit and play with various options while Monitoring the temps, and if you need more advise then just ask on here
