URGENT: Unstable GeForce 1070 GTX OC 1518mhz

Hi.

I seem to have an ustable OC from PCSPECIALIST. They built the laptop with specs as below, and the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 OC 1518 MHz - 8.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1 seems to be unstable. I say this because I do a lot of data processing and rendering using AGISOFT METASHAPE and PIX4D. Agisoft has recently started giving me errors relating to CUDA and the graphics card and cannot continue processing.

I thought it was because I installed the latest windows version - windows 10 profession version 1809 (OS Build 17763.253) but I uninstalled, put an older windows version on, and I still got the same errors.
I then thought it was the latest Nvidia driver file causing a problem with the new windows, so I uninstalled the card and put an older driver on and still have the issues.

So I then rolled back the version of AGISOFT METASHAPE and installed an old version of Photoscan 1.4.3 and I got the same errors.

I have also recently started playing CS:GO and it also freezes randomly and then continues. So I was led to search for a benchmarking or diagnostics tool and I happened across Unigine Heaven.

I put the settings on Extreme and ran benchmarking. It freezes the computer and restarts.

Any ideas how I can find out the proper problem or if it is an Overclocking issue then how do I fix it.

Thanks

Have you monitored CPU and GPU temperatures?

Is Clevo Control Centre installed?

Have you adjusted any settings related to the CPU or GPU yourself, such as frequency, voltage, etc

Hi Oussebon,

I am currently downloading and installing control center. I have NOT changed or adjusted any settings myself. The PC is still setup as I received it from PC-Specialist - with the exception of new software and new windows version.

I have used MSI Afterburner now and it appears the temperature of the GPU is getting as high as 90 degrees Celsius just before it restarts. Perhaps the issue is from overheating?

Hi Oussebon,

I have installed Control Center however can't seem to find the app to adjust any settings. I have run heaven again and it doesn't crash (I also raised the laptop on an egg carton, previously it was just sitting on the desk) so perhaps it was poor air flow. But I still have the same problem and error with the processing software where it fails to utilise the CUDA cores.

Please see the errors here:

The Control Center normally shows in the system tray but if it isn't running then you need to search for HkeyTray.exe It should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Hotkey\

I'm not sure if it was set in the BIOS but I do know that the latest version of the Control Center shows an undervolt on my CPU and possibly a downclock for the GPU. A review/post I read mentioning a previous version mentioned that there were issues with throttling at the stock voltage and the undervolt set in the newer version actually helps the CPU run faster.

My I9 9900K, undervolted, tends to sit at 4.7GHz & around 70c while gaming. The GPU's being downclocked also helps stop them overheating and throttling. I haven't had any issues while gaming.

If it is the Control Center that applies these then yours may behave better once it's running.

Hi TremF.

I have found the HKeyTray, and I tried to open it but it doesn't do anything? Do you have a link I can download a better version? I don't think control center is working?

I've been doing a few more tests and checks and it seems my GPU is not using any shared memory at all. I ran Unigine Heaven and this is what the performance monitor was showing - 2e5da9d6-1709-47bb-a854-7b58c72ea507.jpg

I'm not sure where you got the CCC previously but sure PC Specialist should have the up to date version? Log into your account and go to Tech Support & Download. Select the version of Operating System you have installed and you will see a list of apps and drivers.

Or you can try getting it from Clevo if yours isn't the latest.

https://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download/default.asp

Make sure the driver for your graphics card is fully installed too. Even though I had the driver and GeForce Experience installed I didn't have the NVidia Control Panel so couldn't turn on G-Sync etc.

Ya, I'll try get it again, downloaded the Control center straight from PCSpecialist but it doesn't seem to be working.

Control center is a driver so only shows in the running system tray, it won’t show in programs or anything.

If you double click on the icon in system tray does it not load it?

Just as an aside:
The GPU's being downclocked also helps stop them overheating and throttling.

If one has to downclock the GPU as the only solution for a stable system, the system should by considered faulty.

Obviously one can choose to downclock to reduce heat/power consumption etc, but if one has to downclock then it;'s a problem :)

I've also noticed that it no longer shows the two graphics cards in device manager - previously i'm sure it showed the intel onboard graphics and the nvidia graphics. now it only shows nvidia?

Trying to install the chipset drivers etc again. device manager.JPG

I agree. If a downclock is needed for stability then the system should be considered faulty.

I haven't had a lot of experience with laptops but, the thinking behind my comment, from the one I have now that has desktop CPU & GPU in a much smaller form factor heat is definitely going to be an issue if running full speed. I haven't personally downclocked my GPU but looking at the Control Center it looks like it has been set that way but as it doesn't hinder performance I'm not bothered... yet. :)

As for the OP's INTEL graphics issue, mine only has/shows the NVidia GPU and I don't have much experience with laptops (I've built/used desktops for years) so I can't help/advise there.

Maybe give PCS a ring.

It just seems like windows isn’t correctly configured.

Did you install the chipset drivers first after windows?

Hi Spydertracks, I have just formatted and reinstalled windows with the drivers off pc-specialist in order from their site. The Control center works now and I can see all the buttons etc.

But I still have the same problem with Agisoft Metashape where it bombs out and with Heaven where it flashes during the benchmark??

What nvidia driver have you got installed? What version? With nvidia drivers, it's best to install direct from nvidia as the PCS one will be outdated.

I don't know how Agisoft works, but I'm guessing it's perhaps not accessing the dGPU and therefor crashing the iGPU? It's a possibility, may be worth running it purely on the dGPU through nvidia control center.
