usb 2.0 port not working on optimus iv 17.3

Can anybody help? After setting up our laptop we have discovered the 2.0 USB port isnt recognising any devices. The 3.0 ports are working. Is there a simple solution to this or will the laptop need to be returned and repaired?. It a Christmas present and we are gutted if its not fixed or even here on Christmas day. Thanks.

Firstly all the USB's are pnp so they should work regardless of the OS running. Check in your device manager to see if anything is actually amiss there, it should give some simple information about errors if any.
