USB-C Port not working at all

Full spec of my build is below! I tried using the one USB-C port the other day to get some things off my phone, but no joy. I tried other cables and also just simply charging some USB-C headphones I have and the port is completely dead. I should add that that was the first time I've tried using it, so it's not like it used to work and has suddenly broken.

I've checked device manager and the port seemed to be registered there with a fairly recent driver. It says "NVIDIA USB Type-C Port Policy Controller". I also went into the BIOS to see if anything USB-related was disabled and it didn't look like it? All the USB ports are enabled anyway. And all other USB 3.0 ports on the back are working too.

I'm fairly competent with computers, but by no means an expert, so any suggestions are welcome!

That Nvidia Type-C port isn't your USB port. In Device Manager are there any devices with a yellow triangle and black exclamation mark next to them?

Can you also please open an elevated PowerShell session and enter the following command....

driverquery | out-file c:\drivers.txt

Then upload the file c:\drivers.txt to here please.

Thanks for the reply. There aren't any devices with yellow triangles no. I've run that command and the file is attached.

Which USB-C port are you plugging into? Is it on the rear of the PC or on the top of the case?

Hmm that's really unusual. If there's no exclamation marks in the device manager then it would suggest that everything is functioning as it should with the driver set available. Even if the driver was incorrect, I would still expect power from the port just with the way it is designed.

To rule out the driver, try installing the latest chipset drivers. Link Here.

If that doesn't work I think you may be onto a proper hardware fault.

I've installed the latest chipset drivers as per your recommendation, but no luck it seems.

A hardware fault was my first thought really, given plugging anything in to that port doesn't elicit any reponse at all. I guess it isn't the end of the world as I barely ever use USB-C and I have some USB-A to C cables. Just slightly strange really...

Any other recommendations at all other than just chalking it up to a hardware issue?

Other than a hardware fault I can only imagine it being disabled. Either via the BIOS or via software. There may be a software controller for the motherboard installed, I'm not familiar with the B550 management software though so I'm not entirely sure.

Actually, as per the above... I don't want to assume that you're plugged in where I think you are.

Could you take a picture of the area with the port you are plugging into?

Thanks so much for both of your help guys. I now have to explain the very embarrassing reason why it wasn't working.

I went to take a picture of the port so unplugged my USB-C cable and thought it felt really loose. I noticed that there's a kind of thin metal guard which stands slightly proud of the ports themselves, I guess to make it look tidy? Anyway, that guard was slightly bowed around the USB-C port, so I pressed it in so it was flush with the port and now the cable goes in fully rather than only halfway in. And, hey presto, it now works perfectly.

Really sorry about that... I should have checked the cable was plugged in properly to start with, but I just assumed that because all the other USB-A ports worked, then it must be something driver or hardware related.

Anyway, thanks again!

Not at all, thanks for feeding back. Will make all the difference should anyone else have the same issue :)

Lol. Don’t worry about that mistake. My wife worked from home for a while during lockdown and once plugged a USB card reader into the Ethernet cable slot. It fitted somehow.

She then proceeded to reset the machine four times, phone NHS IT, then called me upstairs (as I was also WFH) asking why it wasn’t working.

Don't be sorry, your experience may well help somebody else. :)

I once had to travel from the south coast up to Cheshire to troubleshoot a system that wasn’t working properly. It turned out that someone had managed to connect 2 male 25 pin D connectors. Whoever it was must had been pretty dedicated, as that is not an easy thing to achieve.

Way back in the days of microcomputers (and before the IBM PC) if you needed to connect two male connectors you needed a small connector with a female on both sides. You could also get the reverse of course. We called them 'gender benders' but I guess that's not a politically correct term these days?

This person managed to connect them without anything else in between
