VFX & Gaming PC with a £2000 (ish) budget..

Hey all,

I'm a VFX student and currently cooking up the specs for a PC that'll meet my needs.

Programs I'll be running over the duration of my course are, in no particular order;

Maya, Houdini, Mudbox, Photoshop, 3Dequalizer (probably not that important as I don't imagine it to be that resource hungry) possibly in the future Zbrush, Mari, PFtrack..

In addition to that I also offered to help out on some gaming mods so Unreal, Unity and possibly Crytek editors..

So I was thinking of the following..

  • Case NZXT PHANTOM 410 WHITE GAMING CASE
  • Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor Extreme i7-4960X (3.6GHz) 15MB Cache
  • Motherboard ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
  • Memory (RAM) 32GB KINGSTON HYPER-X BEAST DUAL-DDR3 2133MHz X.M.P (4 x 8GB KIT)
  • Graphics Card 3GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 780 Ti - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
  • 1st Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
  • 2nd Hard Disk 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
  • Power Supply CORSAIR 650W RM SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
  • Processor Cooling CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler
  • Thermal Paste ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
  • Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Regarding the GTX 780 Ti, can anyone confirm that it is the Palit one mentioned in one of the posts?

Thanks in advance! :)

Ditch the Kingston SSD and go with the Samsung ones instead. The kingston ones are slow.

Thanks for the tip WortonTech! I didn't even notice the Samsungs there, guess it pays to scroll down a bit more :)

..I guess if that's the only thing that seems amiss with the build then so far so good :)

It is likely to be Palit, but not guaranteed, you would have to phone PCS to verify exactly which card it would actually be (if they know at this point - stock may change before your PC is built)

Super Star
I wouldn't get the faster RAM, there is very little difference, and the 4960x is a rip off, I'd get a 4930k

Thanks for your input everyone! Looking at the 4960x I think you're right A314159, it's a £350 difference between the 4930k and 4960x and the performance boost doesn't seem to justify that extra expense so I'll probably go for the 4930k after all.

Following this change, it also means the money I've saved I can put into extra SSD! (one for programs and one for current projects). I've also changed back to the 1600 mhz ram (it was like a £8 difference between 1600 & 2133 but tbh I doubt I'll be able to tell the difference). Also decided on a little less 'blingy' case.. so after a slight adjustment I am now considering the following;

  • Case FRACTAL DESIGN ARC MIDI R2 MID-TOWER CASE
  • Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-4930K (3.4GHz) 12MB Cache
  • Motherboard ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
  • Memory (RAM) 32GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (4 x 8GB)
  • Graphics Card 3GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 780 Ti - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
  • 1st Hard Disk 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
  • 2nd Hard Disk 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
  • 3rd Hard Disk 2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2003FZEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
  • Power Supply CORSAIR 750W RM SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
  • Processor Cooling CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler
  • Thermal Paste ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
  • Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

Does anyone have any comments regarding this selection?

Umm.. maybe bit of an weird question to ask, but will I have to specify the colour of any optical drives? or will PCSpecialist choose drives that match the colour of the case?.. don't relish the idea of ordering a black case and having a beige dvd rom drive :)
