Video Editing & After Effects SFX plus 4K Gaming - £6k budget - Ideas?

Shouldn’t a serious video editor be looking at Threadrippers and beef up the ram?

How would threadrippers fare in games, I don’t know. I can’t do that bad.

Threadripper will be OK in gaming, but not great. Partly this is because they are deliberately at a lower clock-speed (no way can you maintain the same clock speeds across 32/64 cores as you can on 12) and partly because Zen 3 Threadripper doesn't exist yet (surely it will).

16 cores is a lot though. I'd be pretty confident it will do the job.

But yeah, I think 64GB RAM is pretty essential with this build...

Yep - from experience, you'll definitely want at least 64GB, preferably 128GB if you're working on 4K comps/edits. Being able to turn off After Effects' Disk Cache and store rendered frames in RAM should speed up your workflow. I'm also in the process of speccing up an AE/Premiere/C4D machine and am chopping and changing things. I've gone for a 32-core Threadripper, but I'm not planning on doing any gaming on the system.

Puget Systems benchmarks for AE show the 5800x with a significantly better score than the 3900x. They also recommend at least 64GB of RAM. The 5950x, 5900x and 5800x all had higher scores than the TR CPUs.
