Video editing pc

Hi all
I want to buy a editing pc that will comfortably handle 4k footage and ideally 6k and 8k.

Is there anything anybody would change about this, without a big impact on the cost?

What software will you be using? What length of videos will you be editing? There are a lot of areas of this build that need improving. To start with, you have an old generation CPU, slow RAM, weak power supply, non-optimal storage and an out of date WiFi card. Please include the configuration link so that we can suggest some changes. I fear your budget will limit what we can suggest.

Thanks very much for this. My only initial question is that I've heard that for 4k footage, 8 cores or more on the CPU is best. Any thoughts on that?

It's largely a budget related restriction, the step up to 8 cores is just over £100

If you just upgrade the processor and lower other components, that puts the system out of balance and you'd be sacrificing the platform which leads to various issues aside from lessens upgradeability.

Editing is prolonged heavy loads on both CPU and GPU, thus higher temps and higher power rating requirements. As such you need a solid platform to base the build off.

Unfortunately prices are sky high at the moment with everything that's going on in the world. Last summer we could have built an absolute monster for this price.

With the 3700X, there are eight cores but they're slower, so in terms of work done in a given time it evens out. If you can afford the 5800X it would be a really good option, but it would add a fair bit to the price as it needs better cooling than the 5600X does.

Just additionally to this, the 3000 series are quite old now, the 5000 were released this time last year and are a whole new architecture and significantly more powerful, hence why the 5600x actually beats the 8 core 3700x

A few months have passed, and I'm ready to do this thing! The graphic card previously recommended is not longer available, so I chose an alternative, and have upgraded to 8 cores on the processor. Can anyone let me know what they think of this as a spec for an affordable 4k video editing pc??

I would probably go with a faster M.2 for the one current projects. Either Seagate Firecuda or Samsung 980. Read/write speeds are probably most important thing for editing machines.
Also, depending on the content you are going to edit, 1TB may not be enough and you are already occupying both of the M.2 slots and one of them is pretty small sized.

I would push for a 2TB single M.2 and leave the other slot empty for an upgrade later.

Of course if that M.2 fails, you will lose both operating system and the current work data, but if you think about it (and automate daily -or better twice daily- backups) its actually safer. The odds of losing the M.2 drive which holds projects stays same. And since you wont be storing any valuable data on your boot drive that wont be considered as data loss.

No point getting a PCIe 4.0 SSD when the 5700G only supports up to PCIe 3.0!

The PC world has changed quite a lot in the last few months. Intel are now on top again, perhaps not by loads but by enough. So I'd suggest getting a build based around an Intel chip, perhaps the 12700K. @PaulTaylor635, what's your budget?

I'd prefer to keep it to this sort of level. Say a top end of £1850 - £1900 inc VAT??

Here's a build at the top end of that to start with. We can make it cheaper, but I honestly think it's worth spending the money now rather than the compromises that would be necessary.

Case
CORSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700 (2.1GHz) 25MB Cache Excellent CPU: 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores; the 12700K would be nice but is quite a bit more (and is hotter and needs more power)
Motherboard

ASUS® TUF GAMING B660-PLUS WIFI D4: ATX, LGA1700, USB 3.2, SATA 6GBs - ARGB Ready Plenty for the 12700
Memory (RAM)

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB) Needed for 4K, and room for an upgrade to 64GB if needed
Graphics Card

12GB ASUS TUF GAMING GEFORCE RTX 3060 - HDMI, DP, LHR Unfortunately as you say the generic 3060 is out of stock
1st M.2 SSD Drive

500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W) Boot drive (you could cut costs here and get a 670p instead; personally I'd like the 980)
1st M.2 SSD Drive

1TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2500MB/sW) For current projects
1st Storage Drive

2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 256MB CACHE Bulk storage
Power Supply

CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 200 Series High Performance CPU Cooler Will be plenty for the 12700, though it is big and bulky, sadly (I wouldn't recommend the FrostFlow AIO coolers)
Thermal Paste

Thanks. Only just seen this. It's a bit of a jump in cost, but I understand maybe it is still a sensible set up based on timing and how things are now.

Hi All. I was looking at this at the start of the year and am finally in a position to buy now. The last spec I was looking at was this one. Could anyone give me any thoughts / suggestions?
I could push the budget up to £1700-£1800 if it was really worthwhile...

Thanks!

Paul

Well, you need a graphics card, realistically: adding the 3060 brings it up to £1845. It would still be my recommended system. You could get it down to £1804 by going for a less extreme boot drive, though personally I'd still pay the extra.

Hi,
I had overlooked the fact that some other components had removed themselves since your last recommendation I guess because they are no longer available. One or two of the hard drives, as well as the graphics card. In each case I've gone with what roughly looks like a similar thing.

Is there any chance you could let m know where I could go for lower priced options without compromising too much? It is now coming in considerably more than previously and over my budget...

Somewhere along the lines you managed to switch out the 3060 for the 3080ti, which is a 4K gaming card! This brings you back closer to budget, and reverted your storage back to the 980 pro 670p combo as recommended above (and what I have in my own PCS rig!)
