Vyper Series: 15.6"

Hi

Just looking for some thoughts on this build I’ve purchased. It’s in pre production so I believe changes can still be made if I reconsider anything.

The appeal of this chassis is battery, weight and being very slim. I do feel though I’ve went to my preferred budget with this being £1200 and the thing is I could have got more spec with another chassis and being able to add the 2060 and actually still pay less overall. Do i lose much between the 1660ti and 2060?

I’m wondering if its worth paying another £100 to upgrade the GPU or not. I’ll likely add another 500gb M.2 later on down the line anyway.

The game I play most of the time is Final Fantasy XIV, other games on my desktop off the top of my head are Destiny 2 and Sekiro.

Any thoughts are appreciated. :)

£1147 with the 970 Evo 500gb. Which isn't really worth it tbh, framerate would be identical and loading times will be within a fraction of a second most of the time. But still less than your Vyper, even with a 2060.

If you really, really, really like the Vyper chassis, drop the RAM to 8gb, drop the SSD to SX6000, and the RTX 2060 only adds £20 to the price.

You can always add more RAM down the line when you have a little more cash. And the SSD won't make a perceptible difference.

I would be interested to see what the temperatures/frequencies are like on the Vyper though. It's only 1.6KG and has an i7 6-core and an RTX 2060... I mean, it could be fine. But that's ambitiously thin.

What kind of issues could the temperature cause? That itself sounds kinda off putting.

Also thanks for the other info.

Throttling where the components don't run as fast (so as to output less heat), and if the system ran at very high temps for extended periods, it could affect the system's lifespan.

Unfortunately, for various reasons that aren't really worth going into, pretty much any gaming laptop you can find is going to run quite hot. This is because Intel's CPUs put out quite a bit of heat, and laptops are aiming to be as thin as possible too. It's not impossible to have a thin laptop cool decently, and thicker laptops don't always have good cooling either - however, of the two I'd probably favour the Optimus, for bang for buck if nothing else.

I’m thinking I may keep the current config as I’ve read the 1660 ti isn’t too far behind performance wise but also runs at lower temperatures.

Would upgrading the thermal paste make much difference for the CPU temps?

Might see about the Optimus if there’s still potential issues even when considering the above.

So I've been thinking I want to go for the best GPU I can afford when it's available since I wont be able to change it later so I'll see if I can change to the Optimus X. Is the Proteus worth considering as it seems to have a higher refresh rate on the screen? I do prefer the more plain design on the Optimus though.

When I've went to amend my order online it doesnt have an option to change chassis. Hopefully I can contact PCS direct to do this? I'm still at the pre production stage.

Also happy new year!

Happy new year :)

The Proteus is a little more expensive but does have a better screen. Hadn't realised how little more it was. I wouldn't buy it for the extra 24hz, but it has higher % NTSC which means the colours will be more accurate. So it's definitely worth considering. Though the Optimus should still be more than fine for gaming

You may need to cancel your order and submit a new one, but you can ask PCS.
