Hi All,
I bought a custom PC some years ago (2011!) and I think it is definitely time for an upgrade. I have some knowledge of computers but not a lot, so have no real idea what I am looking for. I'm particularly flummoxed by the processor and gfx situation; the rest is fairly standard I think.
Processor: This is my main reason for the upgrade as my processor has finally become my bottleneck. I use my computer to run android emulators. Right now I have an intel i5-750 in my machine which can cope with running 6 emulators just about. That's obviously 8 years old! I'd like to upgrade the processor so that it can run at least 12. I've been told that using a processor with multiple cores (and threads) will be the most beneficial thing for this, but can anyone tell me how I could ascertain how many an improved processor might be able to cope with before purchasing? I don't want to go through this and then realise my new improved processor will only cope with say 8 emulators.
HD: 250gb SSD for the main drive would be a necessity, probably add a 500gb HDD for storage even though my current setup has one of those that is never used.
RAM: Currently have 16gb DDR3, would definitely need 16gb (assuming DDR4) preferably in a configuration that allows easy expansion to 32gb or 64gb later down the line.
GFX: An awkward bit that I can never figure out. I am not interested in using the PC for games but I have 2 DELL U2711s that I want to run in full resolution (2560 x 1440). As far as I am aware, these monitors only run this resolution via DVI or DisplayPort links, so I need a gfx card with at least 2 of these outputs that is capable of running both simultaneously. I currently have a EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 which does the job just fine.
And then the usual peripherals (Wifi card, Quiet fans, DVD drive, anything else I've forgotten).
Budget £600 - £1000 but idk whether that seems reasonable?
