I realize I'm probably paying a premium for Alienware, what would you recommend from PC specialist to compete?

Take out the 980 from the second build for an 'inbetween' PC. The 1000W is good for SLI 980s which really should be your aim if you're wanting to spend £2k on a machine. But then again, that's only worthwhile if you have a monitor to go with it.
