What connection to use for PC to HDTV...?

Hi there

I recently purchased a new PC - overall I am very happy, however do just have one question. When I brought the PC, I also brought a HDMI cable as i thought this would be the best way of connecting it to my HDTV. I have now found that when I connect my PC to my TV via the HDMI cable, the picture is worse than when i use my VGA cable - is this normal? Could anyone tell me the reccommended way to get the best picture from a HDTV as a monitor with HDMI and VGA connections and a PC with a HDMI, VGA and DVI connection?

Many thanks in advance

go to the front page of Windows, where your wallpaper and shortcuts are, right click, then choose Resolution, then trial the resolutions until you find one suitable for your TV

Definitely HDMI to HDMI for tv connection. You just have to fiddle a bit with the video settings.
Resolution for one,as mentioned by Wozza365.

Thanks for your replies. I think the options for resolutions is the problem...when using VGA, the max resolution is 1680*1050 and when using HDMI the max is 1920*1080. I would havce expected the HDMI to look better as the res is higher, but the lower res on VGA looks much better. Do you know if there is anything else i can check or fiddle with?

Also - when the PC comes out of standby, if in HDMI i cannot get a display picture at all, I have to switch back to VGA to see anything...Ideas on this would also be appreciated!

Is it the same on all HDMI ports ?
Most TVs with multiple HDMI ports have only 1 of these ports designated and optimised for PC input, check your manual.
Settings for the video will depend on what graphics card you have.
Also, make sure AVG cable is disconnected when using HDMI.

I only have 1 HDMI input on both PC and TV so assume this will be optimized for PC use but will try and find the manual and check.

Also, i dont currently have a graphics card installed, will be buying one soon - I didn't think this would make a difference though as the HDMI input is on the motherboard...however i assume now this is incorrect?

Not sure I follow you,but i don't think your doing anything wrong.
If your tv is capable of accepting HDMI from your PC & your graphics is capable of sending it through HDMI OUT,then you should be able to do It.

HDMI - HDMI then choose "fit to screen" on your TV settings (Samsung TVs) or other makes may say otherwise.
