What to do with the old SSD

I am busy trying to transfer all my stuff off my old Laptop onto my new laptop but as the old one is being scrapped would it be better to take the hard drive out and just use it as a external storage device, and if so do I have to do anything to enable me to use it
I have an old HDD 750GB but for some reason I cannot format this drive to use it as an external storage device so was wondering if the old laptop SSD would work in that way

Assuming it's a SATA SSD (ie. plugs in like an HDD) then you can take it out, fit it in a caddy, and use it as an external drive on your new laptop just as you would an HDD.
