When adding additional RAM i get 'no signal' on the monitor

Hi Guys,

I have a new machine - just a week old. It has 16gb of DDR4 3000mhz of Corsair RAM in slots 2 and 4

I bought an additional 32gb of the same memory in 16gb modules (same brand, speed etc) when I install it, I get the ‘no signal’ message on the monitor. Just going back to the factory spec ram works fine. I have tried everything - every combo of RAM in different slots and it says no signal every time with anything other than the factory modules.

Does anyone have idea idea as to why this is?

The motherboard is an ASUSTeK PRIME Z490-P

Cheers

Is this a PCSpecialist machine? Can you post your full specs from the order page?

If you install CPUz and go to the motherboard tab, post a screenshot of the motherboard details:

Where did you buy your RAM from?

Take a picture of it and of the existing RAM and put on here please.

Also suggest you get straight on phone and register the computer with PCS - this way then you can access full spec and also upgrade options via an account online with PCS.

Those aren’t identical, as the original and new sticks have different latency. They are also different capacities 16GB in the top photo and 8 in the lower one. They also have different model numbers. Whether that is the cause of your problem, I don’t know.

Yes you seem to have 16GB of RAM installed - in two sticks of 8GB each - and you are trying to add 32GB in two more sticks of 16GB each. That ain't gonna work I don't think?

:) glad this was picked up and answered as was still investigating what the differences meant LOL :D

It was the CL ratings I was reading into - although some sites do say it shouldnt matter too much as it would just run at the lower rating. More reading :D LOL

RAM is a bit of a minefield when you're matching pairs.

Different sizes shouldn't matter, it's all down to voltages and timings.
Just thinking Spyder - am I right then in saying that if you had a single stick of 8 and one of 16, with the same timings, you could get away with it too - but it would behave like two 8’s?

Then with four sticks (2x8 and 2x16) - if they were in fact compatible - they just get paired off as two twos with dual channel thingymabob - so it’ll be 48 GB of RAM total?

Ponderings is all - so don’t waste time explaining!!

No, should see the whole amount.

For instance on my laptop I currently have 2 x 4Gb and 2 x 8Gb DIMMS.
But your four sticks are paired off correctly? So it sees 8 GB and 16 GB in two sets making 24 GB total? What if you only had one of each - it would still be 12 GB total then in one dual channel set?

Jesus - I'm getting confused now with all those numbers. Just say the answer is 42 and let's move on...... (y)
