I guess it depends what you are going to be using it for, what your maximum budget is etc? Both have their pluses and minuses (although both have the minus of using Intel hard drives) but they are not equal....more RAM would be needed if doing something like video editing or playing flight sims but both would also want the better CPU......GPU you would want the better one if playing games. Hard drive size depends on what you use the system for as to how much space you need

i want the laptop primarily for gaming but i play some cpu intensive games such as ARMA 3, the ram i have chosen is because the cost is negligible for the 32gb option but im also future proofing, my current PC is an intel i5 7400, 16gb ram, 1060 6gb, im bottle necking on the cpu due to the 4c 4 threads even in COD:MW, i chose the cpu's because they are both 8c 16 threads so wont see any bottle necking for a few years, the advice im after is performance all round, i am also a hobbyist so im possibly going to be doing some editing, programming, etc. i know desktop would perform 2-3x better but i spend 12 hours a day at work sitting at a desk so i need it to be both portable and powerful. weight not really an issue just performance and thermals, i chose intel because of the optane cache, to my understanding this works much like ram in that it places things in the optane cache to decrease load times and such. im struggling to find decent reviews on these systems online and i know the chassis details.

IMO Optane is a complete waste of money when paired with an NVMe SSD. Optane is, as you say, a drive cache placed between the SSD and RAM, the idea being that regularly used data stays in the Optane cache and avoiding accessing the SSD. This kind of drive cache can be helpful (for the right data usage patterns) where the drive is an HDD because of the very slow access times of HDDs. With an NVMe SSD which has no mechanical moving parts, thus no seek time and no latency, and a data transfer rate of 2300MB/s I just don't see the point of the Optane. Any difference it makes is going to be tiny. I would suggest you spend your money on a larger NVMe SSD without Optane.

my problem is that there is just too many options, for me i love gaming, i want a laptop so i can take it with me, i cycle to work so i need it to be a laptop over a desktop but i just have too much choice, i dont need huge amounts of storage as i tend to play 2-3 games at a time, media consumption is on my tablet so not too fussed about the internal storage but i have 3 games i play regularly and i want to play cyberpunk so i figured 1tb will be plenty, can always add more later, im thinking of app development in the future so im under the impression i need ram in the millions lol ive been playing with the configuration and i still cant decide where to spend my money lol

i dont think the desktop processor offers me much over the mobile variant and the 2080 max-q seems to be only a minor upgrade over the 2070 super so now its a decision between 15inch or 17 inch 10875 and the 2070 super, 1tb 970 evo

beyond this i dont have a clue laptops are new territory for me.

As mnetioned before, Intel drives are best avoided where possible..beyond having long-term write stability issues, the Optane is pointless on those drives....you can get a Samsung Evo 1TB M2 drive for £20 less than the Intel and has superior read and write speeds...no contest really

With so much RAM, you could also use even half of it as a RAM-cache for the storage drives to speed-up data transfer (read-only), instead of the Optane. But anyway, that's just my opinion ;)

I wouldn't go near an intel drive anyway...and Optane is just pointless on an SSD. Much better to go with the better, and cheaper, Samsung M2

Hey TIMWAT, I'm currently having trouble deciding which laptop to opt for! could you tell me what you think of your purchase? How is the gaming performance on the more demanding games? Also, have you had any issues, such as heat dissipation or battery/power problems?
Any advice would be much appreciated and inch me closer to actually making a purchase !
