Why was I advised to install OS on 2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 PCIe NVMe, not 50GB Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SSD?

I chose to have the OS installed on the 250GB Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW), keeping the larger and faster 2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W) for storage. However, when I completed the quote, an advisory message appeared stating this was not recommended and I should install the OS on the 2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W) which to me seems a complete waste.

I am missing/not understanding something? I am a Software Engineer by trade, so I am quite comfortable with the technical details of computers, although not being a Hardware Engineer, I would not call myself a hardware expert. Any thoughts?

You always keep the OS and programs on the fastest drive.

NVME drives (most of them) are about 7 times the speeds of a normal SATA SSD which the 860 Evo is.

Basically NVME is the newer format and can support much much faster speeds. SATA SSD's are old now and usually used for storage or in older PC's that don't have an M2 slot.

You can put it the other way around if you like, but you'd notice the difference if you put OS and programs on the NVME.

Fantastic!!! Thanks SpyderTracks. I simply swapped the the drive capacities around i.e. a 250GB NVME for the OS and a 2TB 860 EVO 2.5" SSD for storage and saved myself £200. Thanks for the advice.

No worries, you'll be blown away by the responsiveness on the M2 drive and you picked the best performer out of the bunch, just an epic drive.

It's not a 2TB EVO. It's a 2TB QVO. Which is a budget drive. It's still an SSD ofc. What are you keeping on it?

Also what's with the Optane module?

And why 32GB of RAM? I seriously doubt you'll ever be able to fully utilise that. Depending on what applications you use of course.

And why WIn 10 Pro? What Pro features do you need?

:)
