It's very stable on most newer machines. I personally have had zero problems with it on 4 separate laptops and desktops one of which is 6 years old. I would say it's well worth it over 7 or 8, but if you're worried, you can always change the order to 7 and reserve your free upgrade when you get it, then you've got a year to install it.

The only time it seems to be a problem is when drivers aren't updated properly.

Is it quite an old PC?

Based on my limited experience with my Optimus IV laptop it's very important to let Windows 10 install the appropriate drivers via Windows Update. Only the chipset (and hotkey for Clevo chassis) should need to be installed manually. Yes, allowing Windows Update to install drivers goes against the grain, and against decades of experience too, but now that "Windows is a service" we have little choice. All the problems I had were because I was installing drivers manually. Letting Windows Update install drivers was the only way to get everything working.
