Will be ordering a gaming pc next month after years of console gaming. Can someone double check to make sure I'm not wasting money anywhere

Relatively new to PC hardware, I've been out of the game since Intel's Sandy bridge CPUs.

Thinking about ordering the below build. Can I get a second opinion before I drop the dough on it?

Cheers!

Monitor 1080 p 144hz. Will be upgrading to 1440 down the line. The cheapest 144hz monitor I can find is 180 so will be getting that.

Main uses are gaming and streaming maybe :) will be looking to do dual monitors at some point.

I have a spare 60hz monitor I can use as a second for now.

Budget £2500 at the most

You need to make a few adjustments, its not an optimal build for the money you would be spending. Motherboard will starve the CPU and AIO is an old model. If you do a lot of streaming it sort of justifies the extra RAM and CPU, but I would want to up the PSU and would question how soon you are intending to upgrade monitors?

You can order without a GPU and source something like a 1660 or 1660 super to run the monitor you have now until you are ready to upgrade the monitor.

Are you able to include the config link at the bottom of the page you copied to here? makes it a lot easier.

I'm looking to spend £2500.00 at the max.(not including my monitor budget which is £200.00)

For the monitor I'll probably upgrade in a year or two.I'm looking to get the MSI Optix g241 full HD 24 IPS LCD. Or if pc specialist has something close to £190 that's better I'll get that!

2nd monitor will be my crappy 60hz 1080 monitor until I have funds to get a decent 4k monitor and then I'll use the MSI one as my 2nd :)

Ideally I want to get a 30 series GPU in this build purely for future proofing. I don't mind if it's overkill for the monitor as i'm going to buy an upgrade in a year or two!

Full HD is still only 1080p, and future proofing with GPU's is just pointless... in less than a year it has already moved on, and the GPU is the part you replace every two or three years.
So basically, you dont need a high spec GPU for at least a year... which makes the idea of buying a cheap GPU for now and focusing on the rest of the build something worth really thinking about.

Have a real dig through this:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/desktop-building-guide-sept-2020.67892/
Then have a look at what you would want to spec.

As a rough starting point, ive spec'd the below, left same case and the extra cables etc but working on the idea that you buy a GPU separately thats aimed at 1080p monitors. (A 3060 would do the job but would be overkill really... i'd advise something like the 1660 super secondhand until ready to upgrade to 1440p properly, saves you a lot of money which can go towards the upgrade)

PS You dont want bullguard, windows defender is as good as any paid for program these days and far less issues.

Considering your budget, you could get a PC and a Monitor at the same time, then you'd have 2 monitors for streaming (a new one and the one you currently have)

The build below would very comfortably run a 1440p 144hz monitor.

The Ryzen 7 is a great chip for gaming and streaming and it pairs well with the X570. As you stream you'll find use from 32GB of RAM. The 3070 would max out a 1440p 144hz monitor and might manage a lower hz 4K monitor if you were to lower the settings if you still plan to get one down the road. For storage, I've given you a 500GB SSD for Windows 1TB for your programs and games then a 2TB HDD for all your general files. The 850W RMx PSU will run this system comfortably and leave room for upgrades in the future. The h100i is the best pairing for the Ryzen 7 when it comes to CPU cooler. The wifi card will give you 5.0 ghz bandwith as well as bluetooth. Bull Guard is known to cause issues so I've removed it and the silver warranty is well worth £5.

Monitor wise, for £300 you can get a well performing 1440p 144hz monitor. A forum favourite is the Samsung G5 But another good option is the AOC G27G2U if you like red. A comparison between these two monitors here

Fabulous thankyou!

Now let's say I was willing to splurge on a 1440p monitor now.

Would your opinion change?

if you were getting a 1440p 144Hz or 165Hz monitor to go with this build now, i'd look at a RTX 3070, but wouldnt need to change anything else.

Just out of curiosity.
If I was to use my full budget of 2500.00 and get a 12 core Ryzen and possibly more ram, would you say that would be a wise investment if I buy a 1440p monitor right out the gate or not?

I picked the Ryzen 12 core XT purely for the performance and I plan on it lasting 6 or 7 years before I upgrade.

If I'm taking the complete wrong view point please correct me!

Really appreciate the input!:)
Thankyou!

Edit you left 32gb of ram in , my mistake

could you explain the reasoning of the Ryzen 7 over the 9 just so I can understand ?

Thankyou so much for all your help I really appreciate

You could go for a Ryzen 9, although the 3900XT but is now a generation older (the current generation is the 5000 series so the 5900X for R9's). That said the Ryzen 7's generally have better single thread performance which is more important for gaming and the Ryzen 9's generally have better multi-thread performance so are more recommended for creative professionals (video/photo editing etc) and heavy multi tasking (I think I've got that the right way round 😂). I think the Ryzen 7 5800X is still a fantastic choice and will still do more than the job you need it to do.

Little confused with the RAM comments, Given the budget I'd recommend 32GB. Going for 64GB on a gaming and streaming system would be pretty pointless.

If you wanted to blow the whole 2500 on the PC I think the main thing I'd change about my build recommendation is the Storage layout.

I think that's covered everything!

You can play with the storage a little and up the RAM to 3600MHz and it comes in just over budget but a proper full-fat 1440p machine, going for a 12 core would help for things like video editing, but for gaming and streaming its only adding to your pricetag rather than giving you any real gains.

Im not convinced by the case, it has Corsairs new "Elite" fans in which arent quite out on the open market yet but I think you could trim a little and perhaps look at the 4000D or 465X and still have equally good case performance.

You would then be looking at a new monitor, anything less than 1440p 144MHz wouldnt make sense and you are looking at £250 for a "meh" and closer to £350 - £400 for something worth having. If you want IPS rather than TN (so better visual colour/display angle etc) you can stick another £100 on that easily.

I would also like to point out that if you're going to all that trouble and building a beast like this, and then taking a cheap mousemat and a bundle pack mouse and keyboard... well its sacriledge.

That kinda business is the work of the devil.

You have honestly been such a star thankyou so much!
Yeah maybe 32gb is a tad overkill. I just remember when I was a kid dreaming about the magical 32 number haha. Might just be me getting carried away!

Thankyou so much for your expertise. I'll certainly look at some benchmarks for the 7s Vs the 9!

Could I get your opinion on the motherboard? It's one area I really know nothing about lol

Below would be the "Have it all" option. The issue with the 5900X is that you need a beefier motherboard and cooling solution to go along with it, so the costs change massively. I've tried to offset it by lowering the second M2 drive to one of the cheaper options. It won't make any odds for gaming, speed wise, but the only option with that drive is 1TB.

The below MUST be paired with a 1440p 144hz monitor for it to make any sense at all. I would even argue that the 3060Ti would be enough for such a build. Next post I will put forward what I would actually recommend.

Below keeps everything inside budget and is filled with knowns, rather than unknowns. It also allows for the luxurious storage and with the savings you could afford a G5 monitor.

I personally would go for this build, made a few savings so you can buy K+M+Headset separately. I've removed the Corsair keyboard mouse bundle because you're honestly better buying these separate and just getting a better keyboard mouse and headset rather than the budget options in a bundle. My recommendations below

Keyboard: Corsair K70
Mouse: Razer Deathadder
Headset: Corsair HS70 Pro Wireless
