Win 7 64 Upgrade from Vis 64 freezing during installation nr end "Starting Windows"

Hi, I've been at this all day. Basically I nearly get to the end and the system freezes. It's still on upstairs now 4 1/2 hours later. I bought my computer through Specialist, order 252975. I can't get the spec at the moment obviously. On other forums people are disabling all sorts of things, others are leaving it as long as four days. Some are taking out some of their hardware, for some these steps work most are left with problems. I am completely stuck. I get near the end of installation and I get the "Starting Windows" screen. It's still there. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Driver8,

We had this same issue with the XP to Vista Upgrade and then the Vista to Win7 Upgrade. It is most likely a driver or piece of software within your Vista Operating System which is causing the freezing/lock ups. It will take forever and a day to find the culprit so the best advice as stated above would be to format the HDD and perform a clean installation using the Windows 7 CD. This doesn't happen all the time for every upgrade but has happened a number of times in the past, I'm afraid its just one of those unavoidable situations.

If you need any help with the format/reinstall feel free to call Tech Support on 0844 499 4000 and they will be more than happy to help out.

Hi driver8 i updated to vista to windows 7 because at the time i had lots of backing up to do and i just could not be bothered re-installing all my games and had no problems, but do regret it and have a few problems - should have done a clean install which i really need to do now after around 10 months

Thanks very much for your advice. Will do.

This makes a lot of sense. Thank-you for taking the time to respond. I did back-up. All the best.

Hello again, I've tried formatting the disc as you said above but what happens now is that the installation goes all the way through and then leaves me with a blank black screen. The computer then just stops making any working noises and that's it. My Win 7 version is Ultimate 64 Full. My system details are with my order number which is 252975. Any pointers gratefully received.

Sorted black screen at end of installation Win7. Thanks Pc Specialist. Here's how.

Hi, Phoned PC Specialist Tech Support this afternoon and he told me I had too many cables attached to my monitor. A blue and a black both going to the PC. He suggested I left the black and removed the blue. Bingo. So if you get a black screen after installation of Windows 7 with a cursor you can move, then this is probably your answer too. All the best. Thanks for your help.

Brilliant, glad your up and running - I knew it would be something relatively simple.. just quicker/easier to diagnose over phone rather than a millions forum posts!

Enjoy!
