Windows 8 to Windows 10

I have a serial key for Windows 8 that I purchased from the Windows Store in 2012. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 when that was released but have not upgraded it to 10 yet. I have read online that you cannot fresh install Windows 10 and that same key work as it is still assigned to Windows 8, and this was the case when I tried to fresh install Windows 10 on a friends laptop, so I will need to go back to Windows 8 to upgrade.

My question is, what version of Windows 8 will I need to install when my laptop comes. Windows 8 or 8.1?

The free upgrade applies to W8.1 only.

Upgrade to W10 using the upgrader, and your key data is uploaded to Microsoft. You will never need to input a key again if you install W10 fresh after the upgrade.

Ahh so I will download 8.1 to my USB stick ready for when the laptop comes then install that and then upgrade to 10 then. Thanks for your help!
