Windows does not boot after GPU driver installation

Hi all,

I have a problem with my GPU and I think I have narrowed it down.
It seems this a common problem but there doesn't appear to be a solid resolution so I am hoping turning to here will help me.

Summary -

As it stands now, Windows does not boot after installing GPU driver. After having GPU issues for the last 2 weeks (see further details below) I am currently running on a fresh Windows 7 Pro system after multiple restores. When I come to install my GPU driver (GTX 780), and I am ensuring I am installing that only via custom install (no GeForce Experience, 3D, Audio stuff etc) the installation wants to restart the PC. I hit ok and on reboot, the system does not boot. My monitor just displays black and my PC continues to run . I am forced to do a hard re-set each time, go into safe mode and uninstall the driver. It does not matter if I install the driver by the disc that came with the PC, or download from NVIDIA. It also doesn't matter which version I install (tried 3 or 4 now).

When the driver is uninstalled I can run Windows normally but of course I am having to use 'Generic Non-PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter'. And on device manager under Display Adapters, GTX 780 is not there.

PC spec -

Hardware
- ASUS Maximus VII Gene
- i7-4790K Quad Core
- Palit Super Jetstream GTX 780
- 840 EVO, HDD
- 32GB Hyperx

Relevant software
- NVIDIA Control Panel (pre-installed, was fully working and I was running 3 monitors just fine)
- Geforce Experience (think I installed after purchase, always up to date and working)
- Thunder Master (pre-installed , was always working)
System
- Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (never encountered any major issues, not even one BSOD in 1 year)

History -

- PC purchased from PC Specialist just over a year ago
- It has been running absolutely fine up til now
- 2 weeks ago my displays started to intermittently crash during some games to black screens and my fan would go 100%
- the tower appeared to still be running normally though
- the temporary fix was to hard reset and reboot in safe mode
- uninstall the GPU driver and reboot
- after 6/7 times of the fault/fix cycle, the final time I encountered a Windows error and the system would not boot
- I have had to try multiple restores just to get Windows up and running successfully (issues with Start Up Repair and my BIOS boot settings went strange)
- currently Windows is installed on my HDD (previously it was on my SSD, I thought this could help)
- motherboard drivers installed OK
- Windows updates installed OK
- SSD drivers installed OK

So I think I am fully refreshed now and I cannot think of any reason as to why this shouldn't be working.

Any help please?

Many thanks in advance

(sorry this is long, more info the better)

I think I had a similar issue a few years back. It turned out to be a faulty GPU. Make sure the card is firmly connected (including the power) otherwise I think it's a replacement GPU.

May you be able to tell me why I am still able to get an output to one monitor at the moment (I am using a VGA slot to VGA monitor slot) when drivers are not installed, even though the graphics card may be faulty?

If you're using a VGA to VGA, that must be off the motherboard graphics as the 780 doesn't have a VGA out?

Sorry for the double post but just to confirm on this.

Yep same thing for me.

It was the GPU. I have temporarily downgraded to a 750TI.. Drivers installed OK, NVIDIA Control Panel showing, system recognises my monitor (no standard rubbish). etc etc. So yes it was the GPU.

For anyone looking to get this card it was the Palit SuperJet Stream 780 and lasted just over 1 year.
Not sure what the warranty was on it but I was expecting at least 2 years.

But oh well.

Thanks all
