Work/Gaming PC

could you give an example of the stack you're using for web design?

Once you got a couple of node threads running the ram is eaten up pretty quick.

You mentioned PHP so I guess you're just working off a presumed lamp stack?
Currently using WAMP for WordPress development and testing. Still very much in learner mode due to my full-time job.

?

Noise and power consumption aren't really related, other than more power consumption = more heat = more cooling = more noise. So lower power consumption can go hand in hand with a quieter system.

For Photoshop and FM the 9700k is probably still the preferable option (hard to say as no Zen 2 FM benchmarks)
But your other uses could potentially benefit from more threads, I couldn't say.

A similar spec based on Zen 2 would be: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/FMZTjUuPUS/

NB: The RM850x PSU was suggested before as the smallest RMx series unit PCS sold (with these specs). But they now offer the RM750x. So go with that and save £20.
Great. Thanks for this. (y)

before you're too deeply embedded into a stack I highly recommend xampp, for some reason wamp's PHP modules just plain don't work.

Don't use xampps MySQL database though, its maria db and its basically the MySQL fork from all the butthurt MySQL programmers who wanted to rebel against Oracle, they sort of went in their own directions but oracles MySQL is better, install MySQL directly from oracle and manage it with MySQL workbench.

If you want any ideas/advice or anything I'm a Dev who's got nearly a decade in the profession and enough WordPress experience to hate it for its flaws and love it for its ease of use.

It's a good way to break into the industry if you can get decent clients. If you want to break into corporate work you'll need to learn a javascript framework at some point.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate that. (y)

Still waiting for when everything clicks into place and I feel like I've got this. My weekends and weeknights (when I'm not nodding off from day job) are being swallowed up by online courses and youtube tutorials. I seem to be getting a perverse enjoyment out of all the repetition.

I highly recommend you do not follow tutorials and instead pick something you want to build and build up from scratch.

Tutorials are made using the most rudimentary skills and awful examples.

If you want to code then you want to build something. Figure out what that is and use the journey of making that as your teacher.

So this is it. Putting my order in today. I'm probably going to pair it with the LG 29WK600 29-Inch Ultrawide monitor which is going for £187 elsewhere.

Thanks for all your help. I wouldn't have known where to begin.
